2018 Aerojumbles & Aeroboots

Someone else flagged up the idea / suggestion for a thread to list 2018 Aerojumbles & Aeroboots so I thought why not go for it! 🙂

So to start off the dates for Newark Air Museum’s sale events in 2018 are:

Spring Indoor Aeroboot/Aerojumble – Saturday 14th April (following cancellation of 03.03.18 sale)

Summer Outdoor Aeroboot/Aerojumble (as part of Cockpit-Fest) – Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th June

Autumn Indoor Aeroboot/Aerojumble – Saturday 13th October

I’m still feeding back comments to NAM regarding the finish time – as ever a tough decision beckons!

The Bunny memorial is featured in the Notts Aviation Memorials booklet that I put together for NAM and the County Council; IIRC its was difficult to photograph due to lots of reflections form the church windows. That said a fitting tribute to those lost in the crash nearby!

Back on to Aeroboots, I understand that the bookings for next April are still coming back at a steady pace!

Didn’t know about that, TO. I’d have stopped by and had a look if I had. I had just dropped some stuff off to one of the Phantom work crew lads and saw the country park on the way out of the village.

personally 1pm/flexibility is better as I drive from the South Coast and as it is usually quiet, that hour earlier setting off makes a difference when you have the M25 to contend with

Thank you to everyone for the various bits of feedback, which I will feed into the discussions at Newark.

Anon, I drove through Bunny on Sunday morning (it was tipping it down) – slightly off topic did you manage to call in at St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Bunny? It houses a memorial plaque to two airmen killed nearby in a Mosquito crash – 16.06.44, Mosquito FB.VI – HJ767, lost on a night-cross-country flight with 60 OTU out of RAF High Ercall, Salop.

I too attended the aeroboot last Saturday at Newark, but not as a seller, as I was late booking and tables were all spoken for. However, a cancellation did come up at the last minute but it was a bit too late in the day to do anything about it (thanks anyway, Howard).

Of course, the event is as much (if not more, perhaps?) a social event for the die-hards and dedicated – almost everyone who was anyone in the field was there! There was also much to be had on the stalls and it does reflect well on everyone that there is such a great variety of stuff to be had. I managed to acquire a very nice, almost new, Irvin jacket at an amazingly low price, and a big bag of NBC kit to help complete a set of gear we hope to display alongside our Phantom cockpit (XV490 at the museum) at Cockpit Fest next year.

Inevitably, I also came away with those “I didn’t need it – but I did want it” items, but isn’t that part of the fun? I also enjoyed the splendid new cafe – well worth the waiting for. I now await the Spring event and will make sure that I book my table early next time. Thank you to all (organisers and sellers) for an enjoyable day, yet again.

PS – On the way back I stopped in to a country park near Bunny, Notts, for an hour’s march around to stretch the legs and that was very nice too – 24 degrees in the sunshine. A splendid way to round off the trip across!

It’s beginning to sound like there’s enough willing 2pm stayers to allow us less-willing to depart at twelve noon! :eagerness:

Another excellent Aeroboot with some nice small finds and the change to collect a bucketload of Tiger Moth parts! I agree 2pm is ideal for a finish – the lads on the Newton stall I think made a couple of last minute sales which tipped the balance fundraising wise! PS also nice that the museum maintains reduced price entry AND picks the same weekend as Southwell Model Show on the Sunday – nice weekend away!

Thank you for the feedback folks – I’ve also been made aware of one Aeroboot visitor running over to Hangar 2 at 13.50 hours having been advised by the shop staff that packing-up was due to start at 14.00. I will garner additional feedback as and when I can!

Good to chat with lots of buyers and sellers on quite a hectic (but enjoyable) day!

A very good event as usual. I picked up a few goodies, caught up with friends, and thoroughly enjoyed a panini from the new eaterie. What’s not to like?!

Huge thank you to everyone at NAM who made the Aeroboot possible on Saturday. We had a great time, it’s more than just a sale, it’s a social event and a very much appreciated one in perfect surroundings. The day went by too quickly! There were more cars than ever on your car park?

As for our opinion on a pack up time, we find that 2PM is spot on, we sold quite a few bits to afternoon visitors of the Museum. One chap who didn’t know about Aeroboots taking place and was excited about return journeys to future Aeroboots and events after visiting us at around 2.45PM whilst we were doing our pack away.

Here’s to your April sale, thanks again! xx

I will feedback your comments regarding the pack-up time, however the current 2pm time was a compromise reached after a similar discussion amongst the sellers a couple of years back – some wanted it to be later and others earlier.

I’m not sure how quick I will be able to get them to decide.

Sorry about the windy conditions, whilst perhaps not quite as noisy, there were a few hairy moments outside!

Another great event at Newark yesterday, so a big thanks as always to all who make it happen. Well attended and busy (er, up to about early lunchtime that is), although I’m considering legal action against the museum for not supplying me with ear plugs to block the sound of the wind rattling the end wall of the hangar for seven hours (it really was noisy!).

Can I also make another plea on behalf of all stallholders* for the published finish time to be moved forward to 1p.m. if not earlier? Maybe an odd plastic kit or book gets sold to the couples with their kids who make up the vast majority of the afternoon visitors but the real ‘jumblers have looked, bought and departed by about 11.30 a.m. That leaves a further two and a half hours before we can start to pack up, with nothing to do but wander around chatting among ourselves. It really is a tiresome, boring pain in the **** to be kept there beyond twelve noon, for customers who just don’t materialise.

* If there are stallholders with a differing view to mine, apologies, I’ve yet to meet and exchange views with you.

Kenley – There were about 14 stalls this season solely specialising in aerojumble selling a mixture of aircraft parts, instruments, wreckology, books, models, RAF clothing etc. This was combined with the autojumble stalls which were about 3 times as many. As would be expected the odd autojumble stall would have an aviation item for sale. In all it was a good day out, the weather always has a big roll to play in these outdoor events. The event was held in a field within the aerodrome, with obligatory burger van and portable loos. Kenley is a fledgling event just finding its feet, I think that this may be its second year, although the organiser has run it twice a year (summer/winter). Like most aerojumbles around the country it’s future is dependant on the numbers which turn out both in the capacity of stalls and customers to put it firmly on the map. I suppose it’s a case of let’s wait and see to see if it continues to be a regular event.

My pulse is racing at the thought of it all!

Meanwhile, on a slight tangent, can anyone report back on the Kenley ‘jumble last weekend? I decided I could not justify the long journey, especially as I was still not ready for my next visit to The National Archives (i.e. two outcomes for one load of petrol)..

With Newark next weekend I’m going to give Kenley a miss tomorrow. I’ll probably regret it but have been doing too much driving recently. I hope it goes well!

Something for the weekend Sir? – Last reminder for the Kenley aerojumble which will take place this coming Sunday. Weather is looking clear and good for this outdoor event. This aerojumble is also combined with an auto jumble and held on the Second World War airfield. Admission for buyers is from 9am, I believe that there are a couple of pitches left and bookings can be made through the organiser who has placed an advert in the flypast magazine with their contact details, alternatively I can provide these through a PM if required. Happy hunting and selling !!
