22 Squadron badge

Does anyone have an image of the 22 Squadron badge as it would have appeared in March 1918? I’m presuming the same as the modern one but with ‘Royal Flying Corps’ instead of Royal Air Force

airart.

I thought of that site too but I think it only deals with the official Squadron badges granted in much the same way as a Squadron colour. As the badge was only officially sanctioned in 1936 or later, following the Squadrons stay in Malta 1935 – 1936, I suspect the badge as used by the Squadron in the time period Rob requires would be a simple symbol denoting Pi.

I’d be interested in knowing where they were based between the 21st and 31st March 1918 if that’s possible.

No.22 Squadron went from Treizennes to Serny on 21 March 1918 and from there to Vert Galand on 23 March returning to Serny on 9 April.

At the time 22 Squadron were operating with the Bristol F2b Fighter.

Thanks Kev – i’m designing a couple of wooden painted signs to make before April and was hoping to include the Squadron badge on one of them. Me and a few others are doing a WW1 Royal Flying Corps display with the 22 Squadron Bristol F2b at RAFM Hendon on 4/5 April, wanted to make it as accurate as possible so won’t be using the proper Squadron badge.

I’d be interested in knowing where they were based between the 21st and 31st March 1918 if that’s possible.

Thanks for your help, regards, Rob

Rob.

I think you’d need to find out when the Squadron was granted a badge. My understanding is that a badge would be designed and submitted for approval. However the badge came about, I am sure it would be surmounted by a King’s Crown rather than a Queen’s Crown as in your picture, at least until after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was crowned.

According to this page: http://www.raf.mod.uk/organisation/22squadron.cfm

the badge was not approved until 1936 by King Edward VIII. Therefore I rather suspect that if Squadron aircraft wore a badge in the Great War it would be more related to the Pi symbol as the Maltese Cross signified the Squadron’s stay on Malta between October 1935 and August 1936.

If you need a list of types operated, examples of serial Numbers, periods when the Squadron was disbanded or bases operated from and dates just let me know. I have a couple of sources here which give a pretty good idea.
