22nd August 1940 We Remember

THURSDAY AUGUST 22nd 1940 THE CASUALTIES:

1315hrs: Deal. Spitfire R6708. 54 Squadron Hornchurch
Sgt G.R.Collett Killed. (Shot down into the sea. Body was washed up on beach on Dutch coast)

1935hrs: Dover. Spitfire K9909. 65 Squadron Hornchurch
Sgt M.Keymer Killed. (Shot down by Bf109 into Channel. Buried at Bazinghem France)

Luftwaffe losses:
6 Destroyed, 4 probable, 0 damaged

RAF 5 with three pilots declared ‘safe’

On the ground:
RAF 0 Killed 3 Wounded
Civilian 3 Killed 36 Wounded.

Today saw the first return firing of “Whinne” (eventually joined in 1941 by “Pooh”, spare 14 inch Naval guns from HMS King George V) in answer to the eventual 2,226 shells that fell in the Dover/Folkestone area from the long range German batteries on the French coast.
