25 Group momento

I have recently aquired the object shown below…obviously something to do with 25 Group and the Advanced Flying Schools. It is at the moment in a grubby and slightly tatty state and can do with a good cleanup if that can be done without damaging it.

I am struggling to find out where exactly the various AFS were and, also to date this object.
The AFS listed on the left side are…201/2/3/5/6/7/8/9/10/11/15.

Not sure what rank he is.

What an unusual and novel reminder of far off days. Seeing it reminded me of the time I was stationed at friendly 25 Group Headquarters when it was located at RAF White Waltham in Berkshire. It was a super posting and during the 1964/67 period I was there, many long term friendships were forged, many of which continue to this day and are celebrated at an annual reunion.

Regarding the question of Flying School locations, I’m afraid the numbers mean nothing to me but I can at least provide details of the stations 25 Gp administered during the mid 1960’s period. From memory these were: Hullavington, South Cerney, Stradishall, Topcliffe, Gaydon and of course White Waltham itself. There may have been another but I can’t be sure. Other units such as 3 CAACU at Exeter and the 18 UK University Air Squadrons also came under the Group’s control. It disbanded in 1968.

I don’t recall ever seeing Air Vice Marshal Duck but he certainly cuts a fine figure of an AOC. Regards…..Paul

I` d sort some wire supports for it inside the legs and then get a glass or perspex display case over it…No more grime OR moths.

Love it!!! where on earth did you find that ???To be honest ,I think it`s in very good condition for what it is and how old it is…I wouldn`t bother trying to clean it up…just protect it from moths !!!

Actually, my mother-in-law found it at an auction and gave it to me as a birthday present a few years ago.It has spoent most of the intervening time wrapped up in a cupboard as my wife didn’t like it on display.

Now that both my wife and her mother have sadly “shuffled off the mortal coil”, I have a whole house I can do pretty much as I please with …and thought it would be nice to get this out.

It does have some moth damage to the head (under the cap)….it also doesn’t stand properly on it’s own…whatever support was originally in the legs is no longer effective….for the photo it was propped up with a clothes peg(out of sight behind the legs.
To give some idea of the size…the tray it is mounted on is 29 x 16 inches, and he is 18 inches high to the top of his head.
