26/06 @ Milano Malpensa [MXP/LIMC]

Hi everyone!

This is my first post in this forum.

On 26th, I spent all day long in Malpensa, I took various pictures, but there were only 2 interesting subjects.

Let’s start with the “top” of the day:

This was a pax A300 operated by JAL (Japan Air Lines), now, it have been converted to freighter and leased to European Air Transport.

Then, the vueling 50 millions passengers special (The light was really bad)

Milano Malpensa is an EasyJet main hub, normally in MXP, you are tired of shooting them, but this time, I mad an exception.

I’m sorry for the high quantity of pics I put, normally I don’t, but I think that someone could be interested in the kind of traffic we have in Malpensa.

For info about the spotting points or about MXP, if you are interested, feel free to contact me.

Hope you liked them!

Here there are

Them are all taken with my old equipment (Sony A220 + Sony 70-300 f/4.5-5.6), so the quality is really bad, I was a starter photographer 🙂

This is a good photos, but I didn’t saved the RAW file of that one, so, I had to work on the JPG 1200px photo to restore it, the result is what it is.
http://i.minus.com/ijK17Gi8ystcR.jpg

This one had the original RAW, so I did a better restoring process on it 🙂

Now I have a Sony A900 (love it) and SIGMA 120-400 f/4.5-5.6 :p

In milano, they flew in daylight so rarely that in 2 years, I get them only two times

I missed it too 🙂 It was the only thing I didn’t get a decent photo of on my trip.

It never moved.

Let me find mine on my HD, so that I can post them 🙂

Keith,

I sent you an IM saying I will do a map of Ferno location. After reading another thread I’m guessing you are on the Monarch enthusiasts day 5th/6th July. If that is correct I have seen you really only have two evening slots.

It’s easy then. From Terminal 1 head to the right hand side overlooking ramp and position yourself behind the Benetton shop. It’s more discreet than standing in the middle bit although I doubt you’ll get any bother from the police especially since you are on an organised trip. The Benetton shop is next to a McDonalds where there is seating at the window so if you see anything taxi past just walk 5 yards to the gap between the Benetton shop and the window and shoot.

You can’t get lost – it’s easy. 200mm max for taxi shots (possibly even less).
300mm if they are on the runway (depends which runway though).

Practically everything taxies past the window and they are close.

This is the view from the McDonalds seating area looking right to the cargo ramp…..

This is to the left hand side of the terminal looking to the left of the ramp….

These are taken from the big window in the middle of the terminal, basically straight ahead when you walk into the terminal…

The stands…..

Some more taxi shots – these from the Benetton shop / McDonalds area towards the right of the terminal…

These were more distant shots on the runway (up to 300mm zoom)…

This is only a small selection of the rafts of stuff I got on the trip.

Now if you can’t get decent shots here you can’t get them anywhere – no excuses !!!

Hope this helps.

That’s right, but there are some problems at terminal 1 if you are there for photography: the heat distortion will destroy all of your photos in this period, then, the police will give you problem there (tested so much time), but, yes, if you are there not for spotting, then it is a good location too 🙂

Yep I agree on the heat distortion if it is hot. July/Aug probably not best time due to heat haze. I prefer later or earlier in year when sun strength is lower and the sun does not get too high. Even though there are less hours of sunlight.

However they taxi really close so I reckon it will be ok even at this time of year. When I went in Sept it was quite hot but heat haze wasn’t excessive.

Police wise I had no problems whatsoever and in fact there were a group of spotters sat at the table next to MacDonalds all with binoculars, cameras, log books etc and the police paid no attention whatsoever.

Other people I know who went had no problems also with the police. People who have been stopped may have just been unlucky or had a huge lens (which is not required here – 200mm max is enough for taxi shots).

I don’t agree unless you are only interested in landing shots. I got some brilliant taxiing shots from Terminal 1 as you can see in my link. I assume you only take landing shots then ? It’s worth adding that for people who are just interested in spotting and not into photography then Terminal 1 you will see practically everything taxi past the terminal at some point. It’s also a nightmare to get to Ferno unless you hire a car (or you are a local spotter). I had to walk for over an hour from a “nearby” hotel to get there. Taxis are very expensive and 90% won’t even take you to Ferno !

Culpano. Thanks for your input ….. do you remember where at terminal 1 your supurb photos are taken from ?? and what size lens did you use for them ??
I ask these qustions as I have limited length of stay at terminal 1 and very limited baggage allowance next week !!
May stay at Man for weekend 7/8 July though, if the weather is nice ?????

Yes, you are right: this is Ferno, the best spot of Malpensa (and the only decent one)
But, at terminal 1, there isn’t a good spotting location: There is the CBC (Crew Briefing Center) close to the Terminal 1, but from here you can get only takeoff of runway 35L in the afternoon, and is good only for heavy aircraft: the light ones, are too high at this point.

The only good spotting point in MXP is Ferno 🙁

Very nice indeed and welcome to the forum ! A very good selection ! Is that a typical day at Malpensa ? Is the weather going to be that good next week ? as I am coming over with an organised tour !!

Keith 🙂

Keith, this was two days in Sept 2011…from the spot Alberto got the left to right landing shots in the morning. Afternoon the best place for photos is Terminal 1 as nearly everything taxied past with sun in great position…..

Hi Keith,

The next week the weather is going to be a bit cloudy (no rain). The temperature will be HOT! we will reach 40°C

For the traffic, this is a typical boring day. We have a lot of cargo activity:
Cargolux (some times with 748), China Cargo, Chatay cargo, FedEx (a lot) and some other operators with less traffic.
For passengers, we have not so much traffic and heavy. Expect a lot of EasyJet, as MXP is a main hub.

Hope to be helpfull

Great shots. I spent two days there in Sept 2011 and got loads of great shots. I know that spot for landing. It is on a little hill underneath trees. The terminal 1 is also a great place to spot. Milan Malpensa is my second favourite airport after Seoul Incheon.
