263 Squadron Hurricanes

Hi,

I’m trying to find out some info on the Hurricanes as used by 263 Squadron bewteen June and November 1940 before the squadron became operational on the Whirlwind. Whirlwinds had been arriving for the squadron since July but production problems delayed fullscale re-equiping until November when the last of the Hurricanes were removed from the squadron.

The squadron was based at Grangemouth, now a BP petrochemical, plant with detachemnts to Drem and Montrose.

I have a list of the Hurricanes in the ‘P’ and ‘L’ serial range that were used plus some details on those that were lost. Other than the ORB is there anywhere else I can look for info on these aircraft?

I have yet to come across any photos of 263 Sqn Hurricanes.

Hi Alex,
Found one of the photos, but it might be after the period you want, It is HE-A, V6703, Type A roundels, but with a american transport a/c in the background, with old style [ type 1 ?] 1921 to aug ’42 fuselage star.
If you want a scan mail me at jezbrew@yahoo.com

Hi Alex,

I have the same short list as Jerry. It’s from the equipment listed for No 263 Squadron in the book “Fighter Squadrons of the R.A.F.” by J.D.R. Rawlings. Unfortunately, there are no photos of the 263 Sqn Hurricanes in the book.
