I am not sure if the worst accident, but not involving a single aircraft which was in Japan. Anyway, Los Rodeos Airport quite tricky indeed. Close to Santa Cruz de Tenerife and beside the old capital La Laguna is placed in the worst place possible in the island. Funny history. A german architect designed it but put crosses where it shouldn´t be built the airport. He had to return to germany and the local architects interpreted that the crosses meant…..possible sites, instead of NEVER. Well it´s in a flat hill, surrounded by mountains with heavy fogs. Clouds are over the runways so planes come from down the sea and there´s a small gap between the toll plain and the clouds. Sometimes the visual references are tricky. The main dangers appart the fog is an engine failure in low altitude. Despite a new airport was built is frecuently used by local Binter Airlines in islands connections, european charters, Spanish Sheduled (in fact close to the capital, so all non tourist Spaniards go there). Usually IB A340, B747 use the airport. Other remarkable accidents a Dan Air B727 crashed into mountains in 1982 and a Iberia Constellation quite a long time ago, crashed on the runway.

I was 6 when the Tenerife accident occurred, although I recall being 6 and was in primary 2 at school, I have absolutely no recollection of the accident at all ?
When Lockerbie happened I was 17 and working in a shop the moment the news broke. I suppose certain disasters have more emotional pertinence for each individual depending on your age and how ‘close to home’ they may or may not be.
In terms of loss of life aboard aircraft then Tenerife is the worst, the collective loss of life through 9/11 was appauling but not the most significant disaster as per life lost onboard goes.
Any aviation disaster is a tragedy but they often provide lessons that can help to save other lives later on, be it two 747’s colliding or a Cessna making a crash landing.

Although i was not around to see the crash i have heard so much about it. Even though it was the worst in fatalities i think that the Lockerbie bombing was worst. It happened only 22 days after my birthday(1/12/89).
Worst in what sense, because it was 22 days after your birthday?

Didnt the day of September 11th loose more people. About 3,640 people died on an innocent Tuesday morning
The ultimate death tally of 9/11 is beyond that number. However, if you count just the amount of people that were inside an aircraft, it doesn’t come near the tally of Tenerife, even when 4 airplanes are factored in, as opposed to 2.
