Sept 27 th 1940 Sgt Oldfield we remember

Although a horrible memory it is nice that someone today still remembers, thank you for sharing.

I,ve very often wondered what Happened to my childhood ? most of these brave souls never reached manhood and raised a family .

Hi My Name is Michael White in 1940 I lived at 50 Park road in Dartford , I was just 8 years old the day I witnessed Sgt Oldfield,s Spitfire crash In Hesketh Park Dartford , I never knew until yesterday it was he when I read this account etc .
There were a crowd Of us youngsters Playing Football when the Dog fight above started we watched for a while I cannot recall any siren going off if it did we did,nt hear it ,
My Elder Brother was also there [15] at that time , the Dog fight was I think now over Gravesend somewhere to the East of us , I vividly recall a very loud noise from a planes engine behind us, before we could turn around it had already circled behind us boys and crashed into the top corner of Fullers House and Exploded Bullets were Flying everywhere but we saw no danger then,
I recall many Nurses Firemen and ARP Men Gathering pieces that had scattered from this unfortunate Man etc, My Elder brother had picked up his Comb case and Comb , the Leather Comb Case had a camel and palm tree embossed on it but burned in aftermath, I know not of where that finished up .
Shortly after I saw my Mother come Running [we just lived across the street from the park] over to us boys shouting for us to come away I recall a box in the ears for that one !
I was under the Impression at that time the Aircraft was A Hurricane and the Pilot South African , all these past 75 years and I,ve just been re – connected , and corrected , thank you a day to remember among the other times , I would have been nice to visit this Brave Mans Memorial I see has been erected in 2007 .
Michael White now in Canada .

Rogers Freeman Garland Miller, and a photo from a film found in his camera after it was returned to the family. (Photos via Rogers’ sister)

Rogers’ elder brother, John Garland Miller had lost his life on the 12th August 1940, whilst serving with No 149 Sqn.

Ernest Edward Males lost his life 64 years ago today, the words at the base of his headstone say it all.
