Dear all,
I hope somebody can assist me with a query.
I am trying to identify the mission aims / objectives of paratroops dropped by Flight Lieutenant Hugh Scott on the night of June 5th 1944.(operation Tonga).
He was flying Albemarle V1696 with 296 Squadron on this night.
296’s ORB records that :
Scott dropped 9 men of 5th Para Brigade, one dog, 3 containers and two kitbags at 00:13 hours on DZ near Caen.
The first aircraft of the second phase took off at 23:39 (H Scott).
Aircraft were flown by F/Lt H Scott, F/Lt Boyer, F/Lt Crowe, F/O Wilson, F/Sgt Johnson, F/Lt Cholmondeley and F/Sgt Stenning.
These aircraft dropped without mishap with the exception of F/Lt Scott whose stick also had adventures in the back of the machine. 3 men dropped on the first run and then the door collapsed. On the second run the stick were not ready to jump and a third run was made. At the end of this the wireless operator reported from the fuselage that there was still one man and a dog left. A fourth run was made. On the approach to the D.Z. the W/Op tried to encourage the dog to jump but finally took refuge by the gunners turret. The dog and the man jumped on the last run.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
