2nd world war refuellers

Good morning

I am seeking information about the refuellers used for the Lancaster Bombers in the 2nd world war.

I own a Stuart turner engine which was used to run the pumps made by Zwicky Ltd on these refuellers but can’t seem to find out much information on this subject.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Sorry, bazv, but your bowser is a Leyland Hippo and comes from the Cold War era rather than the war.

The wartime bowsers as shown in the Stirling pic were mounted on the AEC 0854 6×4 chassis. Although the cab was typical of that used on the Matador 0853 4×4 chassis, I think it was not strictly named a Matador in official AEC nomenclature (good word that!) and the AEC buffs still call it an 0854.

I took this when I was on 231 OCU Cottesmore circa 1975ish ,presumably an AEC Matador.
When I was a small boy I knew all the truck names, looks like I have forgotten a lot of valuable info in the ensuing 40 + years !!!

And if you want a model of an AEC bomber command refueller: http://www.accurate-armour.com/ShowProduct.cfm?manufacturer=0&category=82&subcategory=251&product=1854

Note that it is a 6×6 truck, whereas a Matador is a 4×4 – although clearly they have much in common.

To NewForest

Hi

Forgot to say the connection with Deutz is that I work for them – industrial engines that is, not tractors.!!!

That’s correct,AEC on left,Bedford on right.(although the Bedford is post war spec with booms and in post war colors)

Indeed the AEC Matador is the truck on which the bowser was based. Another slightly smaller was the Bedford QL.

As in this 1975 Airfix kit? I must have the finished models somewhere…

Hi Timmy – welcome to the Forum.

Zwicky produced their own three-wheeled fuel bowser but wouldn’t have been big enough, I wouldn’t think) for use on Lancs/bombers. They were used for fighter types during WW2 and some passed into civil use post war. I don’t know if Zwicky did any other types of bowser.

The Midland Air Museum used to have a three-wheel Zwicky bowser many years ago. It had been acquired from Alvair/Alvis on Coventry Airport then loaned to Bob Mitchell at Sutton Coldfield and never returned. 😡

Bazv mentions a Matador – was that the name of the AEC lorry the bowser was based on??
