2x 'New' Merlins for sale, ebay

Anyone else spotted these pair of Merlins?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2-Original-Wartime-Rolls-Royce-V12-Merlin-Engines_W0QQitemZ8233728875QQcategoryZ69828QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not sure what I make of the description though and the wording is fab – ‘With the following integral and readily viewable notification, there exists an opportunity to’ … send me your bank details?

other than that it really doesnt give much information does it. and I would want to see more than the boxed reduction gear thing before parting with my 50k. A few more pics wouldnt go amiss.

indeed Dave, the dangers of someone digging up an ancient thread! Why?

Tony,

I guess that ‘Skyfire’ feels he has something to contribute, so i presume he has purchased, viewed or seen these engines.

If true ‘Skyfire’, when replying next click on “Advanced”, scroll down the page and click on “Manage attachments” which will allow you to browse & source said piccies from your pc, then click “Upload”…. simple eh ?

Denis,

….actually its an “Invalid item” because this is an old thread (last November) and any item only remains on eBays database for 90 days 😉

Daz, yes he does – on a stand in the hallway.
Never been fitted to an aircraft, only ever test run. But as Bruce said it will have to have the full overhaul if it was ever to go into an aircraft that was set to fly.

Bruce you say between 10k and 20k for a core engine, so this guy is asking 25k a motor a little over the top then !

If he has tried offering them to you maybe you have some more info on the seller, price origins and reason for sale.

If you can PM me with some details please

Patrick Lindsay had one powering and pencil sharpener

Yes, but only a small one with a single stage supercharger.

Well the late Paul Morgan had a Merlin on a stand in his living room, I last saw it about a year ago and as far as i know its still there!

TT

Doesn’t Anthony Hodgson also have one on display in his house?

OK,

Price for a core engine is anywhere between 10-20K dependant on condition, history and so on. Not long ago, 5K would have bought any Merlin you wanted.

Any engine that hasnt had a recent overhaul can only be considered as a core – whether it is factory new or not. Whilst they may not need as much replacing, they will certainly need seals, gaskets and a whopping great chunk of labour to make serviceable.

I have been offered these engines on three separate occasions. The seller values them a little higher than their actual worth.

zouzy – if you want a talking point, there are far cheaper ways of buying one! And remember 50K is the start price. No-one knows what the reserve is!

Alec Harvey Bailey was a senior service engineer for Rolls Royce during the war years. He also headed the service dept., on many RR documents you will find his title, AHB. A well respected man who is no longer with us.
Caveat emptor!

Perhaps in this case, you should be saying ” Caveat venditor ” then ? 😉

Sorry to be a party pooper Mr Seller but it doesn’t matter a jot if the engines are in ‘perfect condition’ without corrosion without any recent paperwork from an authorised Merlin engine rebuilder no one would be allowed to install them into an aircraft to fly. The CAA will simply not approve of an Merlin engine thats been in a crate for ? number of years to be used (even the military would be to less than keen to use an unkown engine). As an overhaul is in the region of £80-100k it does knock some of the percieved “value” of unkown quantity engines down. A friend of mine recently obtained an imaculate 224, still in a Packard crate for a fraction of that price.
It’ll be worth what someones prepared to pay but a £50k start for an engine to sit in your hall or garage is some ornament!

If they are what is claimed then surely there would be no shortage of buyers and no need to sell on ebay ?

Does anyone know the people who have authenticated them ?
