Will you being using an ‘England South 1:250000 scale’ VFR chart this Spring/Summer? (That’s the quarter-mil one that goes from around Dorset ‘bottom left’ to Suffolk ‘top right’, as we navigators say!). Well, there’s a new issue out this month (Edition 11) and you can be one of 3 people winning your copy for free in an easy to enter (via e-mail) competition.
Where can I enter? – Flyontrack website (See below)
Who is funding 3 free copies? The CAA.
WHY? Well, there’s always a reason or two:-
‘Flyontrack’ (run by GASCo) wants you to get to know its site, and begin to associate it with finding ‘hot news’ and working links to readable practical information resource with linked documents aimed at better navigation, airmanship and reducing the controlled airspace infringements in the UK. (If you have seen the radar replays of infringements yet, it’s worth a visit for that too!)
The CAA, through its own Air Infringements Working Group (AIWG) plus the CAA ‘chart production’ department wants to advertise the fact that there is a new Edition 11 chart out for England South, and also that there is a webpage for every VFR chart, listing amendments and corrections post-issue. So where-ever you live in the UK, you can go to the CAA page and check to see if there is any new change that should be marked on your chart until the next issue comes out, which may be months away.
If this competition idea is successful and easy to run and administer, there will be 3 free charts on offer for every VFR chart issue in 2007 via a simple to enter competition. Closing date end of February 2007, ‘usual’ rules apply.
Northerners, Westeners, etc: We’re thinking of you too, we’re not just favouring Southerners, it just happens the first one is ‘down South’. Even if you are never going to fly in this particular chart area, why not go and have a look as a similar competition will be run for your new chart if all goes well. See flyontrack home page and look in hot news on the home page for this new competition. E-mails sent for this competition will NOT be used for any other purpose.

Irv. The competition is a brilliant idea.
Thanks – If this one goes well, the competition for a half-million Southern will open as this one closes, as it is due out Mid March. (oh no, 😮 more Southern bias! I must look up when the others come out – let me think, where can I do that? – oh yes, it’s the sort of thing I’d find on Flyontrack links page! 😉

Don’t worry Wessex, I got my map delivered yesterday on subsription, so I won’t be competing against you, but it did lure me back to the website, so the bait does work.

Entered!
Glad I hung on before buying my new charts, I had a feeling there would be a new release.
Typical though that where I live is covered by 5, 6 & 8, so I can see I will be back to doing what I used to do when Stationed at Shawbury:
That was covered by 4 maps, so I used to have to spend hours in the ops room sticking the 4 maps together, trimming them into a useable size and then going through the amendments for all 4 and updating them.
It would take 2-3 hours to make your map, before you even thought of drawing a track line on it!
