Hi all,
over the last few years we’ve collected enough money to place a memorial to 302 (City of Poznan) Squadron at Leconfield, where the Squadron formed in July 1940.
The plaque (initially we were going for a window, but EH intervened) will be welsh slate and will feature the 302 Squadron badge.
Not sure if it’s of any interest, but I hope if I keep you posted some of you may come along and see the dedication. (TBC)
There are a number of CWGC graves at St Catherines and we hope to have some displays of kit etc (and please, please, please a flypast!!!!) and a dance in the evening.
Cheers,
Kate

Do you have a website or other details as I have a friend who is heavily involved with Polish veterans in the East Midlands and there may be some who would be interested in attending.

Should have a final date next week, possibly the week after due to the extended holiday. You’d all be very welcome and there will most definately be Polish Vodka at the reception!:D

Ah well, just all come along to the dedication and show your support!

Gladly! Just give us a chance and tell when.

Antoni, as they say, to err is human.
If one man had said in the past that something was red, but he now says that the thing was in fact blue I think it is reasonable to assume that he has changed his mind because he has now seen conclusive evidence that denied what he had thought was right.
In this particular case: I was wrong in the past. The colours in the memorial project are correct.
Certainly in the photographs on page 74 of the badge it looks as if blue is the colour on the bottom.
No, it only looks that in a black and white photo the bottom colour appears as a pale grey. Judging colours according to shades of grey in B&W photos is a tricky subject.

I think I’ll stick with my best point of reference which is the original breast pocket badge and the information from the Sikorski Inst.
No doubt people will quibble, but the vast majority of photos in my collection show this colourway.
I hope the discussion doesn’t lose sight of the memorial itself.

So I was right, excellent….
My apologies but in my defence several of Voytech’s publications, including Polish Aces of WWII, show the badge with blue at the bottom as does Jerzy B Cynk’s The Polish Air Force at War The Official History.

In the past there has been some confusion as to the actual colour layout, but those in your memorial project are correct. This is artwork of the badge as stencilled on 302 Sqn Spitfires in 1943, researched and drawn by Robert Grudzien for a forthcoming book.
Is it possible that the badge changed postwar? In Spitfire IX & XVI of Polish Airmen you show Spitfire TE206 with the badge having blue at the bottom and red at the top. Certainly in the photographs on page 74 of the badge it looks as if blue is the colour on the bottom.

Am I missing something here? Both examples show blue at the top and red at the bottom of the lozenge shape.
Yes, the infill on the wings and beak look lighter, but the top and bottom colour scheme is the same. (or am I being incredibly stupid?)

Thank you. I do hope people will come along to the memorial day (date TBC) and remember 302.
If you’d like any more information just drop me a message.

^(Original breast pocket badge)
The company doing the lettering have the polish characters, as I said it’s purely a rough draft for people to look at.

Check with Voytek, but I think you have the colours upside down. Its red at the top and French Blue at the bottom.
The badge is often misinterpreted because people think it is dark blue and red, and think the darkest colour at the top is dark blue. The blue is a light blue as was used on French roundels. If you check photographs you will see that the tone of the highlights on the raven is the same as the colour on the bottom of the badge.
Polish characters can be found in most fonts if you know where to look.
Copy and paste if you like.

The Polish characters (missing) be corrected before it is cut. Here’s how it will look.
