303 (Kosciusco) Squadron Emblem

Hi Gents

I am looking for an accurate colour picture/reproduction of the Kosciusco emblem as carried by 303 (Polish) squadron on their Hurricanes/Spitfires/Mustangs.

That’s the one with the 13 stars, 7 red bars and 2 crossed scythes.

I have a glider which was owned by the Polish Air Force Association Gliding Club in the 1960’s and which carried this emblem Those Poles deserve remembering and I would like to reproduce the PAFA markings.

I therefore need a good downloadable picture to get a sticker/transfer made up.

The emblem pictures I have found on Wikipedia etc are the version which includes 303 at the bottom which is not as originally applied to the aircraft.

Can anyone suggest a source please?

It’s very small in a book, smaller than on the computer screen. Also I exported the scan to reduce the size. Here’s the original scan 201 kb.

Hi Antoni

sorry, me again! I looked at the Pirat/ACM Lloyd photo on my Ipad which seems to give much better resolution than a computer screen. It looks to me as though there are 5 stars between the scythes on the side of the Kosciuszko emblem. That could make it the version with 303 at the bottom, 5 stars either side and 3 at the top. I’ve got reasonable images of that version.

If you have the original photo could you check for me, then I’ll go quiet, honestly!

It can be seen in the photo. Fades when it’s scaned.

Also if you print the photo of ACM Lloyd with greater contrast a shadowy “Kosciusco” emblem can be made out on the glider immediately in fron of the cockpit

From a Techmod decal sheet.

Man in Spitfire is Zumbach. Joined the LW before the war without disclosing he did not have Polish nationality. After the war invoked the Swiss nationality he was entitled to and given three days to leave the UK.

Man in glider is ACM Sir Hugh Lloyd, Lasham 1971.

The photograph of your glider is too small to see for sure if there is a chessboard but it appears not.

Hi Antoni

best offer I’ve had so far! Where did you get it and is it possible to copy it?

Interesting that the feather in the hat is sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right. Also mostly 3 stars at the top, 4 each side and 2 at the bottom.

Also interesting that in the picture of the old gentleman sitting in the Pirat glider, it has the Polish checkerboard in front of the “Polish AFA Gliding Club” The recent photos I have of that glider doesn’t show it. Wonder if my Skylark had the same

Any idea who was the old gent and when was the photo taken? Is he the same man as the Spitfire pilot – who I think was Jan Zumbach

There was some variation in the detail of the badge. The 13 stars represent the 13 states of the American revolution.
