30th September 1940 – we remember

Monday 30th September 1940 – The fallen.

46 squadron, Stapleford.

Hurricane V6748, P/O J.D. Crossman killed, shot down by enemy fighters and crashed in flames at Tablehurst Farm, Forrest Row, 13.30 hrs.

64 squadron, Leconfield.

Spitfire P9564, P/O A.F. Laws killed, collided with another Spitfire during routine patrol, 10.30 hrs.

152 squadron, Warmwell.

Spitfire L1072, Sgt L.A.E. Reddington missing, believed crashed into sea during combat over Portland, 16.45 hrs.

219 squadron, Catterick.

Blenheim L1261, Sgt C Goodwin, Sgt G.E. Shepperd, and AC2 J.P. McCaul all killed, aircraft disintergrated and crashed during routine night patrol, exact cause uncertain, 21.40 hrs.

AC2 McCaul is another of the airmen who should have been promoted to Sgt.

229 squadron, Northolt.

Hurricane P2815, F/O M Ravenhill killed, shot down by Bf109s, crashed and burned out at Church Road, Ightham, 10.40 hrs.

504 squadron, Filton.

Hurricane P3414, F/O J.R. Hardacre killed, shot down in combat over the south-west coast and crashed into the sea, 17.00 hrs. Pilot’s body washed ashore at Yarmouth 10th October 1940.

610 squadron, Acklington.

Spitfire s/n not known, F/O C.H. Bacon killed, crashed on Alnmouth Beach due to flying accident.

Sgt George Edward Shepperd is another one of ‘The Few’ who lived in the same borough as I do now.
