339th Mustangs from Fowlmere !

Found a few more P-51’s D operating from Fowlmere, courtsey of Col James R. Starnes, 12 victory ace of “Tar Heel” ! There is a famous pub in the village of Fowlmere, went to it years ago. Col Starnes told me it was the place to go for his group during the war. It may be called something like “The Checker Board” ? Can anyone supply the right name..thanks !

the chequers pub sign remembers the airfield operators by having blue and white check on one side for the 339th USAF and the other side has red and white for 19 squadron RAF.

Think it’s the other way round…….

The Chequers has changed hands and is now open again as a sort of “gastro-pub” with and ex-London chef in charge I believe.

Photos from BlueNoser352

Thanks Jimmy, well if you go back on the forum a couple of links, you’ll find three topics I started…one is photographs from the life of Major George E.Preddy Jr, 352 FG Mustang ace…….some nose art jacket photo’s from the 401st BG…on of my favorite aviation historical topics…..a link to Col Jim Starnes of the 339th FG, a 12 victory ace who flew “Tar Heel” , named in honor of my home state …North Carolina. I’ve been collecting 8th photos for many years and thought the fine group here would enjoy them. Plus I got a new scanner and finally figured out who to use the darn thing…!!!!! I don’t think I have any from Nuthampstead, but I will check ! I am going to round up all my 8th AF nose jacket photos and start a link here..I find this stuff amazing and there is a great story behind every jacket or aircraft as to how the named their plane. I really enjoy this board and forum because those here really know their aviation history and espically that of the second world war.
By the way…at age 51 and a rock & roll lover…did you sing in a famous band at one time????? Will check on that Nuthampstead request.

All The Best!

Martin You are amazing!!!! Thanks Mike J !

LOL….Martin I knew when I saw that post I bet you had that photo, I believe I am all out of 339th photos. Maybe I will call up Stephen Anaian, who flew “Baby Mine” and get some more photos of the 339th. He of course got one Me-262 late in the war and damaged another. He now is the publisher of the groups news letter these days. Mike J , thanks for the name of the Pub in Fowlmere. One thing about WWII photographs, its a blessing for all of us in that from all my talking to Eighth veterans over the years , cameras were around these bases and each group had GI’s assigned to run base photo labs for offical and “unoffical” photo’s. So now with the war being over some 60 plus years , new private collections are coming onto the market for us to enjoy! Glad to see someone out there in enjoys looking at old WWII photographs on the site as much as I do. Martin thanks for the scan of Marinell.
Have a good day men !!!!

The invasion stripes on ‘The Comet’ are unusually neat, maybe even sprayed on with a mask?

Great pics BTW.

“Chute Your faded” P-51 339th FG Fowlmere !

I believe the 6 victory P-51 here was flown by George T. Rich of the 339th FG out of Fowlmere.
