388th BG Question

Hope the following info helps:

I believe the a/c your after is actually 42-30198 named “GUZZLERS”! It crashed in Holtland, Germany after being downed by e/a 5KIA and 5 POW.

The Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) is Number 3142. Any probs obtaining this then please contact me for details of where you can get it. They were only the FOURTH 388th BG a/c to be lost in action.

The crew were:
Pilot 2nd Lt A M Bobbitt POW
Copilot 2nd Lt P P McCahill POW
Navigator 2nd Lt L W Wiegman POW
Bombardier 2nd Lt G L Amos KIA
Top Turret / Eng T/Sgt R Clabourne POW
Radio Operator T/Sgt J L Duncan KIA
Ball Turret S/Sgt P E Warren KIA
Right Waist Gunner S/Sgt J Langley KIA
Left Waist Gunner S/Sgt L R Hopwell KIA
Tail Gunner S/Sgt W J Hart POW

Lt Bobbitt in a/c 42-30198, was hit by fighters and went down on the return route (from Hanover). When Lt Wiegman hit the ground, he was picked up by German civilians and taken to a beer hall. Knowing that his escape kit would have German Marks in it, he ordered beer for everyone a couple of times. Then, as he was about to pay for it a couple of German soldiers entered and to his surprise his escape kit had French Francs in it. One of the Germans had to pay for the beer as he was taken prisoner!!!
