The calendar in my office is a “Bemrose Flight” calendar and it says it shows this month a B52H – but it’s got 4 big fan engines. I’m a bit of an innocent in this regard as I always thought B52’s had 8 TF33’s?
Please – what gives? I tried googling B52 re-engine and got nothing worthwhile apart from a Boeing “proposal” with an RB211. I’ve tried searching this forum but failed.
By the way, I class B52 as historic rather than current hence OK for this forum as it flew before I was born – and that’s not true of much flying these days. Besides, you’re nice patient people who put up with ignorami like me….

No according to the QDR there was a plan to convert a number of B52H airframes to EB52-H, Electronic warfare platforms.

Under the latest Defense Review, of the 94 airframes on inventry…of which 78 are operational, the USAF plans to retire 38 or half..this will save $681miilion in operational and mantainance costs..
The EB52 concept is also DEAD…
The USAF Bomber Force will be reduced to….
21 x B2a Spirits
75 x B1B Lancers
38 B52H
The smallest USAF Bomber force ever!!

I’ve also got this pic on a calendar at work.
As well as the four engines, it is also missing the wing pods so no stabiiser wheels !
If you look very very closely (as I did at a quiet moment) it appears that the pic has definately been re-touched and you can just about make out a faint line that I assume is the original wing outline.The question has to be asked – WHY ?
The lack of wing pods would not make any difference to the outrigger wheels as they retract outwards

During my years at Rolls-Royce (up unitl two years ago) I remember seeing a marketing poster which outlined all military and civilian aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce engines. Again there was a B-52 powered by 4 RB211s. Can’t add any more to this subject than that apart from this seems to be a story corroborated by RR sales blurb!

I’ll look for those telltale lines.
Is the partial answer then that the very pretty pic is a Boeing Publicity Department Photoshop Special, which would be reasonable, but as the pic is credited to Flight International why would they provide an image of a non-existent aeroplane for a commercial calendar?

is there a re-engining planned for the BUFFs left..i have heard the US air force plans to keep them in service for another 20-30 years, there must be some modifications done to them if thats true….

A four engined B-52 is a proposal that Boeing have made on a regular basis, and that the USAF / US Government have rejected on a regular basis, mainly on overall cost grounds.
