It’s claimed the extra engines aid the airflow over the outer wings !!. I know the Buccaneer had wing boundary layer control using air bled from the engines but…….
Beats a row of vortex generators I suppose.

Last I saw of this 4 engined Catalina it was called the ‘Bird Innovator’ a few years ago, and in addition to the 4 engines, she carried two small boats under her wings, one on either side!

I had a book somewhere that showed possibly same catalina but in different colours and with turboprop add on engines been years since saw the book now mind so can not remember details.

She is still about but now returned to twin engined status.
