Interesting that the Airspeed Ambassador was only ever ordered by BEA

[QUOTE=cal900;1213628]Saw the same program, always sadder when groups of people are wiped out. Wernt there a WI group from a small village wiped out on the to a crimbo market in Europe once?

I believe you refer to the invicta vanguard crash in switzerland.

Yes, I remember the WI group getting killed in the crash.

I saw the programme on UKTV History this afternoon – and a Russian plane played the Ambassador – they’d even left the Russian lettering on the gauges and you could see it clearly! I think it might have been an An-24, just having a guess, they’d fitted a different tail unit but the nose area looked Antonov-ish.

I saw the first BBC Four programme, it was so moving – that is all I can find to say about it.

I will keep an eye open for the book – what is it called? I might have to order it if I don’t see it in the shops here. Is is mainly about the crash itself or more about Manchester United FC?

I wasn’t born when it happened, I just knew the basic story because of the local connection with one of the players and because my Grandad was an aviation buff.

I wonder if the City fans can manage to keep quiet, I very much doubt it after their fans have been heard singing “We’re all going to the golden jubilee” from the stands in the run up to this match.

Captain Thain.. who never flew another aircraft.. said he did not feel responsible in any way for the crash.. It had taken four inquiries over 11 years to persuade the aviation authorities that the disaster was caused by slush dragging on the wheels.. not ice on the wings…By then.. June 1969.. Thain was a 47-year-old ex-pilot and was not reinstated.

He received his dismissal notice from BEA on Christmas Day 1960 for a breach of regulations.. his failure to check the aircraft’s wings physically for ice traces coupled with his decision to sit in the right-hand seat instead of the left.

Thanks rog747, I’ll keep an eye open for that.

The UKTV History programme is on tomorrow at 4pm and repeated sometime after 6pm. I’ll be watching the earlier one because UKTV History goes off Freeview at 6pm.

i havent read it yet…i dont know if any of the mags on this site have reviewed it yet?
i managed to speak to the author on sunday because he also wrote about the BMA crash at stockport in 1967 which i am interested in.
sounds a nice chap and very informed.

This for me was one of those moments, when I heard about the crash, that is etched in my memory. I was riding my bike up Silver Street in Lincoln to school when one of my mates told me. It seems as if it was just yesterday.
The whole of the UK went into mourning that day.

The crew were vilified over that accident and it was blamed on pilot error..it wasn’t until many years later that it was blamed on slush on the runway.. co-pilot Captain James Thain was correct in claiming that slush on the runway, rather than his negligence in failing to check the wings of the BEA Ambassador for ice, was the main cause of the tragedy.

I’ve not seen a book about it, but then Scarborough has pretty useless shops.

There is lots on TV this week – including some on BBC Four tonight and on Wednesday it is on UKTV History.

My Grandparents said that one of those who was killed – Tommy Taylor – came from the next village to where they lived.
