On this day in 1958, Chief Test Pilot, Derek Whitehead and Observer, Bernard Watson, took Blackburn NA.39, XK486, to the skies for the very first time.
Happy Birthday Bucc.

The first two were displayed at Farnborough in 1958 but the public weren’t allowed to see them on the ground. They stayed overnight Friday to Saturday though and when the gates opened on the Saturday morning I saw them taxiing to the end of the runway. My mate and I dashed as hard as we could to photograph them before they took off – but didn’t make it! I’ve been impresed with the Bucc ever since!
