500th 787 Order

From a Boeing News Release…

EVERETT, Wash., April 03, 2007 — The Boeing Company today announced the 500th customer order for the 787 Dreamliner with a follow-on order from Japan Airlines Corp. (JAL).

The JAL order for five 787-8 airplanes, in addition to several orders from unidentified customers, brings the 787’s order total to 514 airplanes from 43 customers since its launch on April 26, 2004, making it the fastest-selling commercial airplane in history. This increases JAL’s total 787 order to 35 airplanes from their previous order of 30 in December 2004.

“Surpassing the 500 order mark this early in the program – more than a year before the first airplane is delivered – shows that Boeing made the right choice in our point-to-point business strategy, and that the 787 team made the right choices in designing the airplane,” said Mike Bair, 787 vice president and general manager.” This is an enormous compliment to the people around the world who are working hard to ensure we keep the promises we’ve made to our customers.”

The 787 provides passengers with a better flying experience and operators with a more efficient commercial jetliner. Using 20 percent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes, the 787 is designed for the environment with lower emissions and quieter takeoffs and landings. Inside the airplane, passengers will find cleaner air, bigger windows, more stowage space and improved lighting.

BTW: Last week a Boeing executive confirmed the program is on schedule.

i dont like the look of inside the 787 the seats look horrible.

And you honestly think that the airlines are going to have the seats that Boeing have in their prototype?! Oh dear…. And how will it sound like a 757 if it uses different engines?

As long as they’re comfortable and my knees don’t press into the back of the one in front, I don’t really care what they look like.

So I guess with Delta’s exclusivity deal with Boeing, an order for them was going to be a dead cert anyway since it’ll fit nicely into the fleet, replacing the remaining 767-300’s & 767-300ER’s.

Have Delta finally retired their last 767-200’s yet?

And there will probably be more orders soon from a large airline based in the Southern U.S. which should emerge from bankruptcy within the next 30-60 days.

The only question is whether or not said airline is part of the previously announced orders from unspecified buyers.

Absolutely, Airbus know a thing or two about that. :diablo:

In all seriousness though, 514 firm orders before the first machine even completes construction is a tremendous milestone and achievement.
This makes the 787 the fastest selling widebody aircraft since aviation began. An impressive title. Totaly meaningless to airlines but will do a lot to combat any negative spin from Tolouse. Who still maintain the concept of the 787 is the wrong way to go.

Time will soon tell. Only months to go now.

By the By, interesting wee tidbit: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/310128_air04.html

The 787 has even eclipsed the order pace of the next generation 737, which had 476 firm orders by the time the first plane was rolled from the Renton plant Dec. 8, 1996. By first flight Feb. 9, 1997, the next-generation 737 program was up to 502 orders.

The 737 order book grew quickly after that, and when the first plane was delivered to launch customer Southwest Airlines Dec. 17, 1997, Boeing had 737 firm orders for the plane of the same name, according to Boeing’s historical order figures for the next-generation 737…

…If the 787 program is to surpass the order record held by the next generation 737, however, Boeing must land another 224 firm orders before the first 787 is delivered to All Nippon Airways.

Otherwise, after May 2008, Boeing will no longer be able to say that the 787 is the “fastest selling” jetliner ever.

Sales man spin or what! Lets hope everything as written comes to pass. Very easy to sell something, but alot harder to build and deliver on time and as described in the sales leaflet.
