595 Sqn's Martinets,RAF Aberporth,West Wales.

Bit of a very, very, very long shot I know, but has anyone any info on serials/ident.letter tie-ups at all please?

I know the squadron code was 7B and have gleaned some of the serials of the Martinets stationed at Aberporth from this
very interesting website:

http://www.rafaberporth.org.uk/page5.html

Go about a quarter of the way down the page.

The story is that we holidayed in the area(Tresaith, about a mile from the ‘drome)and I’ve long wanted to do a model Martinet
that flew out of there.
I now have a 1/72nd scale Martinet kit to work with,so hopefully, someone might just be able to provide a lead.

Cheers.

Spitfire The History pages 439 to 441 includes the TB range of Mk.XVIs. Photos of TB252, 308 and 382 show high-back aircraft. TB376 is another one of these that does not include 595 Sq in its listed history.

I scoured Spitfire main production lists to see if I could spot anything like the serial in the photo of 7B*J and couldn’t find a serial even close to
what I thought was “TB376” for a Spit IX or XVI.

One that I did spot was IX TE433 but no ident.letter, just that it had been with 595.
I thought that too about the serial positionings,4″ lettering high up near the spine is usually a Vb/early IX trait.
What do you think Graham, would those XVI you mention in your above post be standard or RV fuselage aircraft?

From what I’ve seen,RW,SL and TD serialed airframes were usually the “normal” RV fuselaged XVI’s,but you just never know.

Rawlings quotes three other Mk.XVIs with full 7B. codes, none of which appear with 595 Sq in Spitfire The History. RW388/D, SL600/E and TD151/H

The high position of the serial is unusual for so late in the war, more commonly seen on earlier Mk.IXs.

Excellent,thankyou gentlemen.

Incidentally, this is the only photo I could find of some of the 23 Spits they had on charge at times:

Possibly the “only”XVI that it’s reckoned they had on charge, failing that it’s an IX coded(obviously)7B*J,serial could be TB376,
but it’s rather difficult to see clearly.

Coastal, Support and Special Squadrons of the RAF, by John D R Rawlings.
EM697, 7B.Z; NR633, 7B.M; PX126, 7B.W; RG897, 7B.V
Also examples given for Oxford, Spitfires V, IX, XII, XVI, but not for Henleys, Hurricanes or Vampires.

Used to be the first place anyone would look… times change.

Ap.24 of P.Amos Miles A/c, V.2, Air-Britain lists all 595 Martinets by date, no codes.

Good to hear of one of my old postings, had 2 years based there and love the area. I did original research in the records office and found no trace of codes, so just make a letter up…heres the scheme https://modelingmadness.com/review/allies/gb/attardmartinet.htm
