This is chiefly a question for those who have been to Vienna and/or know its airport. We’re going to Jordan next month with Austrian (new airline for me 🙂 ) and change planes at Vienna. On the way back we land at VIE at 6:25 a.m. but the Heathrow-bound plane doesn’t leave until 12:35.
Does anyone know how long it takes to get to the city from the airport? Are the facilities at VIE decent or we’re definitely better off getting out for a few hours? I imagine we’ll already be checked in and holding boarding passes for the final flight so we’d only need to be back about 40 minutes before take off. I’ve never been to Vienna so I wouldn’t mind making this a mini-mini city break.
And before anyone suggest do a bit of spotting, I don’t think the girlfriend would be mad about the idea… 😉

Many thanks for all the answers! I think we’ll make it to the city and have a quick look around then. 🙂

Is Vienna worth it in the morning?
If you want to find out get a taxi and tell the driver to get you to the “Opera House” or the “Albertina”. Costs you about 40.- euros with tip.
Problem is, there are often quite severe traffic buildups on the autobahn into town. Usually the drive takes 30 minutes, but if there is an accident it might take you two hours. The way back to the airport around noon is usually problem free.
The other possibility is to use the train, but that leaves you stranded on the perimeter of the city in an ugly complex in an ugly part of town, not sure you would find your way from there into the city.
Once you’re in the city go towards the centre (= St. Stephans Cathedral), take a little walk, Vienna’s city centre is quite small, you can’t get lost, and then get yourself a breakfast in one of the Coffeehouses (but not before 0900h or so). If the weather’s fine you can sit around in the open and read your newspapers all morning. Across from St.Stephans is a newspaperstand with international stuff. Nothing else you can do on a Viennese morning I guess.

VIE is a decent airport, and it’s not all that big, therefore, relatively easy to navigate. If you have a lot of time, why not go into the city? Sure, the typical airplane geek doesn’t mind spending a lot of time in the airport, but the average joe would probably rather do something more productive like going into the city.

I wanted to do the same but with me only spending 3 nights there, I didn’t really have the time!

Vienna is a beautiful city. Don’t waste the opportunity. If you have just a few hours, the city tour busses are a good way to soak up loads in a short space of time. I done it myself last year on a daytrip to Vienna from Budapest. Have fun!

I’d recommend it, or find yourself a Lounge, and use it!
I have a 5 hr stopover in Zurich twice in Sept, and i’m gonna get the train into the city on my way to Hong Kong, maybe i’ll find the Globeground Lounge on the way back!

Not been to Vienna, but if it’s anything like Salzburg it will be worth leaving the airport for the Sacha Torte (or some other calorie laden cake) alone!!
