It has been released today that Torrejon Air Base runway will be extended with 1,8 Km. Nowadays its length is 4020 meters and someone told me thats its now the longest runway in Europe. This modification is caused by Baraja´s Airport ampliation, with Baraja´s new runway interfering with military operations (some civil pilots reported to found fighters or other military planes near in their path while they were approaching Barajas). The cost of these new kilometers will be assumed by AENA, the national agency responsible of civilian airports and air navegation.
Two points:
– It´s a problem to have so close (less than 10 Km) a major airport (Barajas is the most important airport in Spain) and a major Air Base (Torrejon is the Most important base of the Spanish Air Force, with a lot of F/A-18s , a few F-4, Hercules, etc and its usually used by the USAF (which was the reason why the base was built))
– Wow, almost 6 Km of runway. I will love to use that with my car
Information about air navigation with maps should be in the Air Information Service (AIS) at http://ais.aena.es but it´s not working today
Merry Christmas
