6 SQN. VENOM

Does anyone have any idea of the possible identity of a 6 Sqn Venom on Coningsby dump in August 1958. Did 6 Sqn convert from Venoms to Canberras at Coningsby?

I was at Coningsby for a week in Aug 1958 and there were a few Canberras in 6 Sqn markings there (WJ972,973,993,WK109). There was also a bit in the station newsletter about a detachment of 6 Sqn being there temporarily but I can’t remember the details. The Venom on the dump I only saw in passing but it had red markings and may have been 6 Sqn. I just wondered if 6 Sqn had come over from Akrotiri to reequip with Canberras on some sort of shuttle basis???

There was no Venom there by 1960. The two resident squadrons were 12 and 9 both with B.6’s having moved in from Binbrook a couple of years previously.

This is a bit light, http://www.rafweb.org/Sqn006-10.htm , but suggests that 6 sqn didn’t return to the UK and Coningsby until they got the Phantom in Jan 1969.
I can’t help with the Venom on the dump I’m afraid

I could be wrong with this but I thought that 6 sqn Canberras were part of the ASW (Akrotiri Strike Wing), the Venoms were based at Akro aswel so would assume that the re-epuipment of type happened there.
