602 Squadron Nose art

Apologies if this has been covered before – but with no search – I cannot check.

I am making a spitfire cockpit section to mount a Mk 14 instrument panel in. The owner wants something painted on the outer side of the fuselage. As it is a Mk XiV and in Scotland – 602 squadron seems appropriate.

On these pictures of the 602 squadron aircraft – there is something painted on the Port cockpit side which is obscured. Does anyone know what it is ?

I know that 602 had a Lion rampant – this is shown as lower on the port side of the Detling image

Thank you for any assistance.

Whilst not helping the marking query along, could that be Clostermann sitting on the cockpit hatch? and possibly another French pilot with moustache (note cap styles) behind the cannon?

Yes that is him.

Only info is: Longues-sur-Mer, Normandy, 1944

Pilot – Aspirant (FO) Pierre Clostermann (French). Glasgow, Scotland, 1944. The aircraft bears the Free French Croix de Lorraine and the Glasgow lion

I don’t know what it is but I don’t think it is a unit or personal marking. I’ve seen something very similar in the same position on at least 3 photos of 203 AFS Spit 16s about the same period.

The Detling photograph is of a Spitfire IXb possibly MH709. There were some Canadian pilots so possibly a Maple Leaf? That is where Clostermann had his FF marking. Is that not where kill markings would be placed?
There are 3 Canadians in the photo 2 on wing Sorge and Robson and one at front Gourlay
The F14’s were post war 1946-1948 coded RAI-
