617 relics – are these for real??

Please see link, if ever I saw something to good to be true then this is it. Just interested in what others think (no names please) I don’t wish to create a political discussion about the dealer.

I guess buyer beware, any potential buyer has to make up their own mind. I found my file the other day with detailed photos of the Russian Stuka panel I traded that got a new werk number applied relating to a BofB loss! the original number has been removed and a new one painted on. Needless to say this irrates me no end.

Can never understand why somebody would want to take the history from a genuine crash relic especially from a rare breed as a Stuka, and change its identity. it sometimes begs belief as to what some people result to to make a few extra quid. (Sad comes to mind)

I am passing no comment on the items highlighted above but a search of collector’s forums will reveal that the eBay business associated with that site has earned a less than envious reputation when it comes to the history associated with some items.

Hi Air Ministry, agreed but please note this is an old link from 2012, I came across it while looking for general Lancaster parts on google, so I guess they have already sold??, I just thought that if these were indeed real Dambuster parts they should be in a national collection like Hendon and you would like to think RAF Scampton would consider such an option before the local antique shop! I have no idea if anyone has them “hanging on their wall” or not (I hope not). Would hate to guess the selling price. The other thing to consider is sometimes such displays get additional items added to make them worth more money. With the anniversary this year there has been a lot of 617 relics on ebay, it just muddys the water for those items that may well be genuine. But these are just my opinions my only intention with this post was to make people aware of the potential problems in the world of collecting.

At a quick glance (and that’s all they are going to get from me) I see nothing which establishes the provenance of these items apart from a typed label and a story, which anyone could have cobbled together. Isn’t this enough to cause alarm bells to ring?

And would you really want a dead man’s personal effects hanging on your wall? Shouldn’t the wrist watch be returned to the family at least? Even if the relics are what they are claimed to be, it’s tasteless, ghoulish, tacky.

For the record, my money will be staying firmly in my pocket. Very, very firmly. Ever so firmly.

Certainly a convincing story. However, I would always be sceptical as the stories of the lengths some fraudsters will go to to make something appear genuine beyond doubt are many.

Fascinating stuff all the same.

The wording on the post implies that when Scampton ‘closed down’ the items came from the museum. As there is a museum on the site now, how were these items sold or given away?
