619 Sqn History…..

I have recently read ‘619 the history of a forgotten SQN’ A read heavy on statistics. The history is unremarkable… as the average bomber sqn goes. It transpires that I work with the son of an ex 619 sqn navigator! He claims that the sqn was enything but an ordinary sqn. One thing that is claimed that it would fly to the target but its aircraft would fly off on some other role or destination? Besides the normal diversionary flights, target marking, and ‘Gardening’ sorties, can any one shine some light on this claim…..?????

I’m afraid I can’t except to say that it perhaps seems unlikely, particularly given the discipline of operating within 5 Group. I also have a copy of the book ‘619 Squadron RAF April 1943-July 1945’ privately published in 1978 which makes use of many veterans’ recollections and there’s no mention of such ‘excursions’…..
