I spoke to the same guy. Think his name was Fuller?
Yeah, that’s him. Fuller Schitt! Small world!

For that matter, how many of us can remember what a Mosquito would sound like at cruise power.
The, otherwise pants, ‘Just Flight’ Mosquito sim gets very close to the sounds I remember from the late lamented Mosquito displays at Fighter Meet.

Some time ago, when I was working for certain publishing company, I had a call from a guy that reckoned he was making a remake of 633 and was going to make the sequal/sequals. He told me he was in the process of making a whole squadron of Mosquitos for the film and even told me they would be easy because they were wood.
He was very insistent.
I decided he was a twit.
I spoke to the same fella while working for a certain aviation related business back in 2001. He claimed to have several hollywood studios interested in the rights to a 633 sequel, foillowing the success of several WWII films in recent years. He said that they would need at least 3 airframes to film the movie, all of which would be authentic rebuild projects.
He also claimed to know the whereabouts of a Lancaster that had remained hidden on a hillside somewhere and that could be rebuilt to flying condition, and he was in talks with certain well known collectors about a finders fee.
He started to bore me after a while…. still.. you never know…

What this has proved to me is that it IS possible to include non surviving and rare types of aircraft in a film that are convincing.

Yeah thats the bit that excites me the most, i mean if someone wanted to make a film about the story of Malta in WW2 (which i think would be a great idea 😎 ) you could have computer generated aircraft attacking, Gladiators (to supplement the Shuttleworth one) and of course the beautiful Beaufighters based at Malta attacking enemy shpping 😀
By: GASML - 6th September 2005 at 14:10
Its all wrong. The aircraft are too clean and the props are not shown as full disks. The noise is just not right.
Credit where credit’s due I guess. The basic images look pretty impressive and the clouds and shadows are really well done. As far as the sound effects go, I suspect that in Japan, Mr. Tochy has never heard a Merlin for real. For that matter, how many of us can remember what a Mosquito would sound like at cruise power.
Of course, I suspect that Toochy is working on his own. For film/TV work, budgets need to accommodate teams of people doing this. To see how the professionals (on a budget of $1 million or so an hour of footage) do it, take a look at www.redvision.co.uk !

I think that’s a bit harsh, Nick
Deal with it! It doesnt look realistic at all.
Its nice as a piece of work but no substitute for the real thing. A bit like a UAV really.

Ummmm….
I can’t say I agree with MOTF entirely either.
The sound, yes, but it’s better than any CGI I’ve seen of WWII aircraft to date.
The sound can be fixed – I’ve plenty of good engine samples of WWII aircraft, inside and out, if Tochy needs them. 😉
As for being good for a computer game or flightsim, well, it’s the kind of quality and realism that us simmers can only dream of, and I don’t think we’ll be seeing that kind of quality for several years to come unfortunatley! 🙁
What this has proved to me is that it IS possible to include non surviving and rare types of aircraft in a film that are convincing.

Yes Buchons are cool, but realistic representatives of type in film are what I would desire, and if cgi can now produce that better over a semi-lookalike, I’ll take cgi. I think with the right desingers and enough money, any film could be produced with convincing cgi nowadays. The advances made in recent years in films like Lord of the Rings prove anything can be done with the right gear and skills.
Here is a cgi Lancaster under construction. Looks interesting – Dambusters may be remade any day… just kidding

And a Fokker D.XXI that looks very realistic – I thought it was a photo

Edit to add – this chap is ‘building’ a Lancaster for an “independent film project” – I wonder what that is…

I agree, too (although lay off the Buchon, Dave. You love it, really 😉 Without it, we’d have had no Luftwaffe in the movies at all! :p)
I sure as hell wish I had the patience to do something like this!
By: Dave Homewood - 6th September 2005 at 12:46
I agree with you James. Some people on this forum will have a go at anything. The fact that these films are most probably someone working at home in their spare time, rather than working with a multi-million dollar studio budget that might iron out the slight deficiencies, I think the latter footage produced is superb. Give the guy a break for goodness sake – how would you feel if someone said that about something you produced with a lot of hard work?
As far as I’m concerned I’d be more than happy seeing these cgi Mosquitoes throughout a film – they look more the part than any Buchon pretending to play the Luftwaffe.

I think that’s a bit harsh, Nick. In particular, the seaplane film is low key and effective; a couple of clips from that cut into a film would be perfectly credible. I thought the sound of the water on the float was very ‘believable’. Sure, looking at them on a qualitative basis here, there’s lots’s wrong. If we are looking at it critically, one can nitpick till the cows come home. However, I’d submit that they are special effects (SFX) and as part of a proper film, or presented as animation, they work well enough – the improvement over time in quality is notable.

Not very good at all but ok for a computer game, if thi is the best of CGI then it still has a long way to go!

I was reminded by this stuff of the Spitfire that Moggy posted last year. He and I have tried to find the original thread but cannot, but here is a thread on a different forum with the same photo. It’s a very nice replica Spitfire, all cgi it seems.
