633 sqn Nord 1002 identities?

I believe there were two Nord 1002/Me108’s used in the films “633 Sqn” and possibly “The Longest Day”. They were subsequently acquired by the late John “Jeff” Hawke and were ferried by he and another pilot from RAF Wattisham to Zahns Airport, Long Island, New York, though one made a forced landing on the sea ice on the east coast of Labrador. Does anyone have the identities of these two Nords and are either of them still around? One was certainly in pseudo Luftwaffe colours with the code “14” the other looks to have had just black chevrons.

Thanks for the details on N108U Mr Septic… and the same image of F-BGVU was previously linked to the original poster on WIX in post #5 😉

Hi Roobarb

F-BFYX (N108U) Yellow 14 flown to US by John & his then fiancee Jean, this aircraft was later destroyed in a hangar fire.

and F-BGVU (N107U) owned by Greg Board but ferried by Francis Freeman and photographer Robin Carruthers, this aircraft had the Chevron markings. The aircraft crash landed on the ice at Pirates Cove and sank.

I will scan some rather poor images later in the meantime here is an image prior to filming.

I think we’ve got the identities in the posts above? To recap, two French registered examples were used and from that you can find the following:

  • Nord 1002 – SNo.274 – registered F-BFBV, later N108J now G-ETME
  • Nord 1002 – SNo.264 – registered F-BGVU, then N107U

Not that many Nord 1002’s have been registered in the U.S . I guess a look at registrations and the years they were registered should answer the question.

Discovered this by coincidence a couple of days ago. It features an article written by Jeff Hawkes about the Atlantic crossing in the two Bf-108s.

http://books.google.com.au/books?id=8UNUHh8XcGUC&pg=PA4&dq=flying+march+1965&hl=en&sa=X&ei=mZMdUaumJLDymAW_koGYAg&ved=0CDEQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=flying%20march%201965&f=false

If the link doesn’t work, try google-books search for Flying – March 1965. The article is called “Messerschmitt mania”.

…geoff

This might be the F-xxxx example… F-BGVU as seen here

This is now N107U, of which the FAA Register has the following:

This link may also prove useful in trying to ID the second example:

This link might jog some memories… there appears to be an F-xxxx reg on the upper wing of one example, but I just can’t read it…

http://www.users.waitrose.com/~g8jan/html%20files/wattisham%202.html

Also, post #14 of this old FlyPast thread might be useful…

http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?t=74255

This points to “Yellow 14” currently being G-ETME (formerly N108J & F-BFBV), of which GINFO has the following:

Dammit, there was a good webpage with the two Nords on it, but I’m damned if I can find it now! One of them was certainly in a pseudo-1944 scheme as “14” (with what looked like the ‘Pik As’ emblem on its cowlings). Can’t remember the other one.
