633 Squadron & Starwars

Not strictly historic but hopefully a little fun for a thursday evening.

I will let the info from the You Tube video do the introduction

Judge how much George Lucas “borrowed” from the movie 633 Squadron for the Death Star attack.

633 Squadron & Dambusters Star Wars video tribute

OK, someone (ahem) had too much time on their hands when they did this… both 633 Sqn & Dam Busters Star Wars in this mash up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mop2WFRfxow&feature=channel_video_title

Some say Star Wars was based on the end of the Dambusters. Others say it was based on 633 Squadron.

Connections
Waves of three aircraft attack, line abreast down a valley / trench.
Guns on the towers fire back. The targetting system are two bars which, at a predetermined point, line up and the bombs are released.
Lucas himself admits inspiration by 633 Squadron, but never really admitted the DamBusters connection…. But wait a minute… What about this dialogue??

Star Wars:
“How many guns Red 2?”
“I’d say about fifty guns, some on the walls, some on the towers”

The Dam Busters:
“How many guns d’you think leader?”
“I’d say about fifty guns, some in the fields, some in the towers”

Still not convinced? check out the vid:

He is quoted as saying that it was the Dambusters that influenced the Death Star attack. It is said to be one of his faverate films.
