66 Sqn Spitfire v Bf109 20 August 1941

Me again.

CAHC at Newquay would like to make a feature of Spitfires based at Perranporth during the war and we have read a thread as to Spitfire Mk.II P8131.

http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthread.php?95403-Can-anyone-help-with-this-66-Sqn-Spitfire-II

Is there any way that we can find out which actual 109 it shot down or the title of the unit it served with? As we would like to make a display of this with models and photographs accordingly.

Best wishes,

Martin

OK – having looked at the thread I see what you are asking!

The 110s were covered by 109s and so I suspect it was one of these. I’ll look further later on, but I’d suspect JG2 although 1./Erg.JG3 also seem to be involved and 66 claimed a 109 as probably destroyed with Sqn Ldr A S Forbes claimed a 109 with Sgt Green.

I’ll look for more later.

On this date I only have P8435 and P7821 lost with 66 Sqn. P8131 survived until 1945 it seems.

The victors on 20 August 1941 were the Me 110s of ZG76.
