7 plane crashes in south Lincolnshire 1941 – 1945

I have been transcribing the war time diaries of a Special Constable who was based in the Deepings, a group of villages at the southern border of Lincolnshire. All the crashes listed occurred within an area around the Deepings. I have some information from the diaries but would like more details. I have details about the Junkers 88, including a photograph of 3 soldiers, sent to guard the site, and a local lady who provided them with tea. The local newspaper of the time was constrained by censorship.
Any information will be welcome. I do have the number of one of the B17s
Sunday June 22nd 1941 A Junkers 88 crashed near Haynes Farm off Back Lane Deeping St James.
December 19th 1941 A Havoc plane crashed on Loss Drain bank
October 2nd 1942 A Flying Fortress crashed at Cubit.
Friday September 8th 1944 A Flying Fortress crashed north of Deeping
Saturday September 9th 1944 A Liberator crashed at Dorrington’s Farm Stowgate
Thursday Dec 7th 1944 A 4 engine plane crashed in Langtoft Fen.
Sunday April 15th 1945 An Oxford Plane crash at Towngate setting fire to a house.

My Dad told me that he once provided guard for a Lancaster that crash landed, near Fiskerton, on the edge of Greetwell Quarry. Don’t know any further details.

Off thread Folkingham airfield was used as a temporary relief landing ground for No.1 Flying Training School,Spitalgate,Harvards 7.47-2.48. Harvard FT353 undershot landing there 26/11/47. Later RAF College Cranwell used it as a RLG 9.56-8.59 for piston Provosts from Barkston Heath. Its use was stopped when it became a Thor missile base from 1960.

[QUOTE=Dr. John Smith;1854227]Partly correct – but do be aware that B.R.M (British Racing Motors) did not get going until the summer of 1945 some weeks are VE-day! (And the first B.R.M. racing car was not completed until June 1949…)

The team also had access to a test facility at Folkingham aerodrome

Folkinham aerodrome was also where. when I was a Patrol car driver. Lincs Police had their very own skid pan, and Raymond Mays provided old engine oil for us to lay on the skid pan. Now theres something not a lot of folk know about. Ahhhh, the good old days.:diablo:

[QUOTE=AgCat;1854186]Before becoming the Delaine bus garage, weren’t those premises Raymond Mays’ ERA and BRM works?

NO, I covered all the Deepings when I was a Copper, and BRM was a tea stop for me, brings back happy memories;) The Delain bus depot was next door.
In 1979 I dug up quite a chunk of Lancaster from near Dog Drove Lincs, one of the Merlins, I have recently found out is in a small museum, at Woodhall Spa.
BTW the A1073 that runs from Spalding to Crowland passes through Cowbit, This road runs along a very high bank, the foundations of which, due to subsidence and silt was mde from WW11 Tanks after the war, to strengthen it

7 plane crashes in south Lincolnshire 1941 – 1945

Partly correct – but do be aware that B.R.M (British Racing Motors) did not get going until the summer of 1945 some weeks are VE-day! (And the first B.R.M. racing car was not completed until June 1949…)

This from Wikipedia about B.R.M.: “A factory was set up in Spalding Road, Bourne, Lincolnshire, behind Eastgate House, Mays’s family home, in a building called The Maltings. (At this stage it was in the former ERA works, vacated in 1939 and used in 1944 as a billet for the Parachute Regiment as it regrouped before going to Arnhem.) Several people involved with ERA returned to the firm to work for BRM, including Harry Mundy and Eric Richter. The team also had access to a test facility at Folkingham aerodrome.”

That would appear to rule out your suggested location (presuming that Wikipedia is correct…)

I have bits of the Lancaster from Langtoft Fen,also some from a Lanc that crashed on Bourne Bus Garage, but never found any records on this one.

I understand the plane that crashed in Bourne in 1944 was a Junkers 88 which actually crashed on a public house in Bourne with pieces landing on the Delaine bus garage. The occupants of the public house(which was demolished) were all killed.

My father was Mike Herrick’s radar op when this aircraft was shot down. I would very much like to acquire any info or photos relating to this incident. I also have a compass belonging to the sole survivor Heinrich Beul.

There was a book called `Around The Deepings` by Dorathea Price which had a few pages on the Junkers 88, there was the official RAF report,a newspaper cutting and pictures of the pilots ring a farmer found years later.

Hi

The B17 crash north of Deeping Sept 8th 1944. The aircraft was actually named “Devil’s Ball” and crashed in a field at Langtoft Fen whereby wreckage severely damaged the farmhouse and buildings at Crown Lodge Farm. Ironically the crash site was about 400 yards from the old RAF Langtoft’s tracking station. Cause of the crash was said to be that the aircraft iced up. There were two survivors the rest of the crew perished. For many years after the crash a propellor blade from the plane was at the farm and was later donated to The Deepings School its location now though seems none existant. Regards Neville

That`s very interesting as I went to Deepings School,I will make some enquiries about it.

Would be very interested to see stuff on these aircraft as I grew up in Market Deeping,The JU 88 was on me friends allotment (backsides) this was Colin Fletcher whose son Steve was sadly killed in an air crash this year. I found a 50 cal bullet from this aircraft in 1977 on a farm `bushbeat`.Horace Thompson owned the RAF Langtoft Rotor site and turned it into a scrapyard eventually.I was told by him he found a flack helmet (with head) from this aircraft during the war…seem to remember there were hundreds of 50 cal bullets lying around.

Ref B17 Crash North Of Deeping

Hi KRS
The Havoc was a Turbinlite (Not sure of the spelling) and parts of it are displayed at East Kirkby.
The B17 north of Deeping was, if my memory is correct, called 8 ball & the B17 at Cowbit might be the same one that I have been getting information about near Spalding.
Are you a local ?
Andy
