70 Years On – Commemorating Sgt Williams. Still MIA

Seventy years ago today Flt Sgt Eric Williams was shot down in his Hurricane of 46 Squadron at Gravesend.

He still lies in the wreckage of his aircraft despite several unsuccesful attempts in recent years by an MOD/RAF team to recover his body.

A poppy wreath will be laid at his nearby memorial today on behalf of his family, and I felt it appropriate to mention it here.

I’m sure you’ll all join me in sparing him a thought or two today.

Moggy

At (I hope) little risk of reopening cans of worms with the cognoscenti, the attached link might give those not in the know a bit of background to this:

Always being one to grab the bull by the horns, my suggestion would be to ignore “official” approach and have a bunch of people go to the site you think is the correct one and prove a whole lot of people wrong,,, I am sorry this might offend a few “officials” but thats just too goddamn bad. Do whats right, not whats official. JT

A real life hero as all the BoB aircrew are. I was reading about him in Andy’s excellent book and pray that one day he will be given the final resting place he deserves.
Thankyou sir and may you rest in peace.

May he rest in peace.

I recall there was hassle around this issue before but didnt hear the whole story.

It is remarkable that he is still missing I cannot understand why someone or some groups pride appears to be more important than the recovery of his remains.

I stopped my vehicle, and shut down the engine for two minutes.

Respect for you.

We shall remember them.

I certainly did spare a few thoughts for Flt Sgt Williams.

At 1pm (approximately the time of the combat over Gravesend), I stopped my vehicle, and shut down the engine for two minutes.

Thanks Moggy.

It’s obviously clear to those in the “know” but not to others on here who have also asked why .
Hindenburg ask why, Skipper says Uh ho with a wink and apparently there are 2 theories on where the poor chap is,and something to do with the hosts on here ,who flypast ???
Clear as mud to me I’m afraid.
Sorry for asking ,may he rest in peace wherever he is and whatever the politics behind it are.

Sorry. Just thought a can of worms was about to explode. No code.
No disrespect to Sgt Williams either. May he RIP, wherever he is.

For those who wish to know without offending forum sensibilities (suffice to say that it caused the largest windmill-ordure interaction that the forum has ever known, with the potential to close the whole thing down – or at least that’s how I recall it. Certainly it was messier than a very messy thing), may I suggest that you find a copy of Grub Street’s fine tome “Finding the Few”, which lays out the reasons for his continued status as “Missing”. With a little local knowledge applied, all should become clear.

In the meantime, a thought has been given for Sgt Williams and his compatriots, deprived of a grave by whatever circumstance.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning…

I fail to see how I could have put it more plainly. There is no ‘code’ just a certain sensitivity amongst our hosts here.

so why can’t the officials search the other area?

The officials refuse to accept the other location as a valid possibility, because then they would have to admit having been wrong for all these years.

Ah, we must tread carefully around this topic. There are two views as to where the Sergeant lies and the official one has failed to find him so far.

Moggy

I love it where topics are started and spoken in coded messages for those in the know and others have to be left wondering what on earth it all means.

Why have the recoveries not succeeded?
