707, DC-8 and Caravelle at ARN at the same time – today! [9 pics]

Today was a great day, not only thanks to the wonderful weather, but also thanks to a unique mix of visitors at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport.

On 27 May 1955 the Caravelle flew for the first time. Le Caravelle Club celebrated this by borrowing gate 11 at Arlanda where they parked their aircraft which apparently included a cabin full of invited guests having lunch and champagne… apologies for the lousy quality photo, I took it with my mobile:

A few hours earlier, the Romanian Government 707 arrived, why I don’t know, but anyway it parked well away from the terminals and thanks to a colleague I received these photos (old camera…):

And if a Caravelle and 707 wasn’t enough, he also discovered a DC-8 tucked away in a hangar just a few hundred meters away! If I’m not mistaken, the livery of this beauty has been designed by a well-known forum member…

A great way to start the weekend, right? If it wasn’t for the livery, one could think it was 1971 again… and the abandoned Transjet 747 was still parked behind the 707 as can be seen on the top photo…

Have a nice weekend!

🙁 Always nice to see a Caravelle anywhere. Sad to hear that it will not fly again. To think that the last time I flew to and from ARN it was on board a Transwede Caravelle STN-ARN and a Sterling Caravelle 10B ARN-STN that same evening…..Happy Days!

Unfortunately the Caravelle will never fly again. According to the club’s latest newsletter, the new ridiculous insurance regulations put in force by the EU has effectively shut the door to this project. There aren’t enough sponsors as it is. Furthermore the history of the spare parts can’t be tracked fully as the aircraft was operated by the Swedish Air Force under military regulations 1972-1999. Thus, the necessary D check will never take place. However the club now aims to make this the most beautiful Caravelle on display anywhere in the world, and the Swedish CAA at Arlanda has offered to help as much as possible with a spot to place it at for both passengers and visitors to see.

bloody EU politicians

Very cool pictures.
Is the Caravelle any closer to being airworthy yet? That was very good of the airport to lend them a gate for the day.

Good to see my DC-8 is doing well. She doesn’t half get about 🙂 Fab pics.

Those are fantastic. Is that from Stockholm’s main airport?

Yes it is, ARN is Europe’s 5th largest airport. All photos were taken today between 11:00 and 13:00 CET…
