Hi guys,
Only my third post I think…
but he’s a question for you…
how can you tell what series a 737 is?
I have flown -200, -300 and -700, I think
but apart from the different shape engines and newer looking interior I can’t tell the difference.
Wondered if you aviation geniuses could impart some inforamation
Cheers Sam

It does, I agree, but this is an optical illusion caused by the larger tail on the 737NG – proportionally the 737-700 is taller compared to its length.

Another way is the engines which are more ‘squared off’ at the bottom on the older 737s and rounder on the NGS.

How do you figure it looks longer? The -700 is a direct replacement for the -300, so if anything, they appear to be the same lenth. In reality, the -700 is like inches longer than the -300. And yes, the NG’s tails are taller.

The 400, 800 and 900s have two overwing emergency exits.
The 200,300,500,600,700 have one.
The 500 and 600 have fewer windows ahead of the overwing exit which distinguishes it from the 300 and 700.
The engines look slightly different on the NGs.
The NGs (I think) also have larger tails…correct me if I’m wrong on this.

Yes there was a 100 version. It was the first 737. Only 30 were built, most of them delivered to lufthansa.
The differences between the different models are sublte to the untrained eye. Apart from the obvious fuselage length the most visable differences are:
1. Larger, in length, engines.
2. The Pitots and probes under the cockpit windows. The Classic 737’s(Models 100-500) have them beneath the last cockpit window, the rounded off one , techicaly called Window 3L and 3R I beleive.
The Next generation 737’s (model 600 and above) have the pitots further forward below the 1L,1R window (the windscreen)
Here they are illustrated:
737 Classics (100-500):
737 Next Generation (600 and above):
The other differences are more subtle and not easy to spot.
Also, the flightdeck is a big giveaway, but only if you get to see it. LOL
