767 gliding…….

I saw a film quite a while back (although the name of the film escapes me) where a now defunct Canadian airlines Boeing 767 run out of fuel while still in flight, the flight crew managed to “glide” the a/c some distance before landing it safely on a disused airfield, this was supposedly based on a true story.

Would this really be possible???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-11-02 AT 01:36 AM (GMT)]No, on the 757 & 767 the fuel gauges just show a digital readout on the overhead panel which is in whatever units the aircraft is set up to show.

RE: 767 gliding…….

Wouldn’t the fuel gauge have indicated the quantity of fuel in both metric and imperial?

Like car spedos, which indicate Mph on the main scale and Kph on the same scale in smaller type.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-11-02 AT 11:06 PM (GMT)]I was just about to post the same picture so have this one instead! I believe the airline was in the process of converting from imperial measurements to metric but the pilots and engineers were given different dates for the changeover! The flightcrew requested the engineers to load so many metric tonnes of fuel and the engineers gave them so many imperial tons! Still at least they made it half way!!! Can’t take a joke, shouldn’t have joined!

RE: 767 gliding…….

I believe it was nicknamed the Gimli Glider..maybe a 767 Flight between Ottawa and Edmonton it ran out of fuel as mentioned before due to confusion with the metric and imperial measurements july 1983 landed on an old runway being used for auto racing at the time.

See picture.

RE: 767 gliding…….

True story…..
I saw last night a documentary about it, very interesting. The was a problem converting to the metric system or something, so they ended up wit only help the amount of fuel as they suppose to. Oh and the stand by fuel cages where broken. The primary fuel cadge was based on whatever you fat into the computer. They converted it by hand and made a slight mistake, divided instead of times something.

jw

Look at topic #2138. We discussed about that topic mid July and wysiwyg gave some interesting figures.
