777 Question

Hi every0ne, is there any reason why winglets are not fitted onto the 777 to extend range though the 777-300ER and 777-200LR have bended wingtips?
Also, how how unique are the 777’s vertical and horizontal stablisers and if so, how do they contribute to its performance and stability?

Also, the vertical stabiliser (Tail fin in leymans terms) and Horizonatal Stabilisers are unique to the 777.

But I thought that most aircraft had vertical and horizontal stabilisers? :confused:

Only kidding, Sandy…. the 777 is a splendid aircraft with an extremely efficient wing design. Like the man says, it just doesn’t need winglets adding to the design.

In contrast, compare it to the tails of other Boeing aircraft. The 757 and 767 units look identical… they are not exactly… one being bigger than the other for obvious reasons along with internal differences. The 747 has its destinctive tail

As to how it contributes to performance and stability on the 777, I don’t know. I would say no one short of a Boeing engineer will be able to answer that.

Thanks Bmused! That has been very infomative. Currently doing a project on the 777, its aerodyanmics, performace and handling characteristics.

If anyone has info, I’ll be glad if you could post it.

The raked wingtips of the 300ER version and soon the 200LR version simply increase the efficiency.

One does not neccessarily need winglets to make a wing efficient.
