After initially disliking the 787, the type has definately grown on me. I’ve only seen limited video of it ‘at work’ and I’ve noticed that the beacons and the other mandatory external lighting seems not to be of the rapidly flashing strobe type. Is there a specific reason for this, or is it a case of my depleted eyesight misleading me. Grateful for any input.

Indeed. In the case of the BMW (and all top class motors btw) the LED lights react a fraction of a second quicker to the application of brakes than the normal incandescent lightbulb. It is said that this quicker reaction allows those behind a little more time to react to the vehicle braking in front, thus reducing accidents. Also, the LEDs should theoretically never need replaced within the average lifetime of the vehicle.
I’m guessing that was also a reason for going LED on the 787, less maintenance, lower electrical current, etc.

They must be rather like BMW tail and indicator lamps, which flash very suddenly and brightly.

Tthe 787 uses LED’s instead of the normal strobe types.:)
Then that should allow for a more instantaneous and brighter flash.
I suspect the technology behind it has nothing to do with the “flash” duration, but rather a study into visibility. Perhaps a longer duration flash has proven more visible/useful in most conditions?

Thanks very much for that info.

The reason for the lights to appear seemingly different from other types is that the 787 uses LED’s instead of the normal strobe types.:)
