The slick looks of the new Boeing are very attractive, the sort of lines a school boy would doodle in his spare time. But do those good looks come at a price?
With such a a swept wing, does this compromise the craft’s low speed/high altitude/hot weather handling? Forgive me if I am using the wrong term but isn’t this a highly loaded wing design?
I know that the 777 did not get the Ibernia contract because (amongst other reasons) the airline’s pilots were concerned about that plane’s high altitude landing performance in South American airports.
I can see where the slick wing profile would be a fuel saver at cruising speed/altitude, but will it be able to get into high, hot airports safely?

In case anyone hasnt noticed, those new A340’s with RR Trent’s have gained a massive 35-40 tons of extra structrual weight compared to the A340 classic. That’s 747 weight territory.
They also cost about 25% more to operate than comparable 777’s. At least they have 4 engines and don’t have ETOPS limitations.

Now that Airbus are offering proper engines (ie RR Trents), that shouldn’t be a problem… ๐
Right, just ask Iberia. ๐

That’s not a problem with Airbus, that’s just underpowered CFMs. Now that Airbus are offering proper engines (ie RR Trents), that shouldn’t be a problem… ๐

I witnessed it when I was a ramper at LAX, I worked for a company that serviced BA, PR, KE, CX, JL, LT, AS, NCA, CX Cargo. When we finished offloading the cargo & baggage from the a/c the Line Mechanics had their ladders out up to the CFM engines on the A340-300 Pouring in the oil in each engine. The reason why it used so much oil is the fact that those engines spin at a higher RPM, thereby burning the oil.

So second hand information from a group of long term Boeing BA engineers then

The British Airways Line Mechanics that would be assigned to Philippine Airlines, when the A340-300 would come in, they would have to put just about a whole case of oil into those engines, now when the 747-4F6 would come in, It would take 0-8 quarts of oil. PERIOD. Plus the Vertical Stabilizers of all the Airbuses are composit, plus the airbuses use cheaper AlNiCo than Boeing. Also Hold 5 of the A340 is alot smaller than the Hold 5 of a 747. There were times when the Cargo load controls wouldn’t work. That’s my 2 cents!

I agree 100%
I still maintain though, that this airline is experiencing daily problems with its A321’s and A330s, whereas their 10 year old 757’s remain reliable.

BigRedMD-11 makes mention of the mechanics at LAX always complaining about the “Scare-busses.” I’ll get him in here to make comment on it as I don’t want to give any false details.

Let’s not get the perspective too out of focus here. Firstly, worldwide dispatch reliability for both Boeing and Airbus products is phenomenally high. The only manufacturer with a genuine concern at the moment seems to be Bombardier which they are trying to address with RANP1 which didn’t achieve the desired results…so it has lead to RANP2…which still doesn’t seem to be getting there! Secondly, this ‘performance degradation’ – if the aircraft are not achieveing the required performance levels then their certificate of airworthiness would be revoked.

here here.
Pilots and mechanics have all been complaining about the build quality of the Airbus product.
Just recently I was told about a fleet of A321’s, fresh from the factory which are always going tech. Same with the airlines A330’s,
But the 757’s this company owns, some over 10 years old, provide a reliable service with no tech issues.

Large parts of the 7E7’s structure are not built by Boeing. Kawasaki, Shinmaywa and Nippi (and Alenia plus Vought) build more or less the whole fuselage, the Wings are from Mitsubishi, Kawasaki and Fuji. Boing builds the tail (Fredrickson), the flaps, the nose (Wichita) and the Kรกrmรกn fairings (Winnipeg). Having said that, you can bet that the Japanese design and build to first class standards.
Usually it’s Airbus who don’t live up to expectations, the more recent Boeing aircraft all did surpass their initial specs.
By: Bmused55 - 28th April 2004 at 09:39
Well, I don’t think they will cut corners as they know only too well that would be shooting themselves in the foot.
They have gleaned a lot of ideas of fast construction with their recent Fighter jet contracts. The lessons learned there will be transferred to the 7E7 production line.
I think the 7E7 will have the same, if not better build quality than its predecessors
By: Bmused55 - 28th April 2004 at 07:59
The Design of the tail may not be quite correct in the concepts, but everything else is fine, aerodynamically.
I beleive Boeing will build the 7E7 to their usual high quality.
And the new agressice sales pitch is I think donw to their new “Don’t f**k with me” CEO.
