hi,
due to visit the IOW shortly, so I googled a/c crashes on the IOW, and up pop’s a long list, reading thru it on the 8/8/40 was a very busy day. With 12 Hurricanes, 8 109’s, 7 ju.87’s 2 110’s and a HR.59 ASR, all on or near by, looking at other date’s close by they had a few drop in so to speak. I seem to remember reading of a raid on Ventnor, would that be the cause or was it a case of a big raid and the fight drifted that way

Jack,
If you don’t get a reply, just pitch up. Steve Vizard – if he is there, is a very friendly and nice guy. If you have an aviation background, that, usually stands you in good stead.
I’ve never knwn AA to refuse. That said, a pre-appointment is just good manners.

Jack,
If you have the time, drive or bus up to Freshwater and take a walk along the grassy clifftop heading East. My wife and I did this walk about five years ago and came across a small plaque/tablet set into the grass. It was a chilly day with a lot of wall to wall grey stratus.
The plaque recorded an event when one of the two Dundas brothers – not sure which one and both RAF fighter pilots, were dog fighting either two or three Me 109’s. Whichever brother it was shot down one of the Me’s and was in turn shot down himself. Neither survived.
The plaque gave an estimation of the site of the battle and as both my wife and I turned to look out over the sea at that moment, a single ray of sunshine broke thru’ the cloud and illuminated the patch of sea at the point where we were looking.
It was a touching moment.
The pilot was John Dundas of 609 West Riding Squadron who was credited with shooting down Major Helmut Wick the Geshwader Kommodore of JG2 on the 28th November 1940. Dundas then fell victim to Rudi Pflanz. Neither pilot was ever recovered.

Would need a bit of time going through and giving you the various references. Sadly, time not a luxury I have right now. Suffice to say the listing is quite inaccurate.

I’m afraid that I’d take serious issue with the accuracy of that listing for 8 August 1940. Additionally, there is no evidence that a He 59 (as mentioned by Jack Windsor) was shot down that day although Sqn Ldr Harold Fenton shot at one before he was shot down by the He 59 itself.
hi,
thank’s for replying Andy, could you tell what the issue’s are/were, or would that compromise my reading of the book by the umm said author?…
