from the Peruvian news Nov-9-2004
9 fishing ships, 6 Chinese and 3 Korean (all owned by chinese fishing companys) were caught and captured by the Peruvian Navy illegally fishing inside the 200 miles of Peruvian jurisdiction.
the operation involved 3 Missile Frigates (Lupo class) 2 subs (209 class) and aircraft of the Peruvian Naval Aviation.
it was known that these fishing ships routinely crossed the limits under the cover of the night and are backed by modern technology to detect and evade Navy patrols by returning to international waters where 2 factory ships waited 30 miles outside the limits to receive and process the “cargo”.
it is also knows that this “cat and mouse” game was being played for a few “months”.
some chinese crews attempted to resist boarding by Peruvian Navy comandos but no major incidents to regret, the crews (192 total) rights were fully respected.
the point exact of the capture occured at 194 miles (6 inside the limit), the operation took 2 weeks between laying down the plan, setting the “trap” and the actual capture.
2 fishing ships are being towed by BAP. Carvajal and BAP Villavicencio (Lupo class Frigates) as their crews sabotaged their engines to prevent being taken to port, BAP Mariategui is the third frigate involved in the operation.
the first ship captured was the “Zhou-yu-leng 09”, this ship performed some “dangerous evasive manouvers” (dangerous for its own 30 crew members) and ignored all warnings to stop, said a Peruvian Navy Official
the fines for illegal fishing of this size could climb to 2.5 million dollars, was mentioned on the newscast.
does any of our friends here have some more info about?
this is only taken from the news and its not intended so start no flame with nobody, specially our chinese friends from the forum, to whom i respect. 🙂 .
thanks to all.

what our good friend Victor says is also truth, thats the exact term, in fact i believe Canada (i live in montreal 😉 )should have adopted a similar EEZ to protect the oceanic life, i remember the devastation on the Newfoundland economy when suddenly …”there was no more fish” (the SOB b. malroney times) again scientists spoke for a long time and they were ignored ( 😡 again)

I know (i live in east coast Vancouver) canada protects it’s aquatic life better than others. We have bans on cod and salmon stocks now due to over fishing in the past… it’s all too sad.
Interesting . Arent the japanese the main foreign investors at Peru?
not anymore… the chinese semmingly want to invest 100billionUS$ more in latin america even after the trade contracts signed during the apec meetings especially in peru, brazil, argentina…

by the way…
the names of the subs (just found out) in the operation are:
SS-32 “Antofagasta” and SS-31 “Angamos” (209 both)
and the Navy comandos in Peru are called FOES (Fuerza de Operaciones ESpeciales = special operations force, same idea as the navy seals)
hamburger man 🙂

Why did the chinese go all the way to peru for fishing?
Isnt Peru in South America and China in Asia
They go that far for fishing 😮
the only explanation coming to my mind would be not enough fish in asian waters, maybe some overfishing around there too?
other than that, i have no idea brother

our chinese friends here are all decent people , i know no bad feelings are to happen and we know the fishing companys do not represent in any way the chinese people, they have all my respect
You are right my future PAF MiG-29 pilot! completely right, unfortunately some automatically associate fishing companies with their national origin, and I’ve already seen some users in other forums suggesting military action on Peru! 😮

hello guys 🙂
distiller.
i knew that chinese investments are important in Peru but honestly i wasnt aware it was “that” important.
also it seems to me that the fishing is a private chinese affair and i doubt that the chinese government has any involvment in the matter (i sure hope)
what our friend F5M says is true, i clearly remember that oceanic life in the region was almost extinct for a while from overfishing, legal and illegal (no exageration, it was devastating 😮 ) as usual scientists were ignored untill it was too late 😡

it seems that the 209’s were shadowing them and the Lupo’s came from very deep in the open sea for the chase to cut the escape route, the fishers noticed and tried to run but only to face the frigates “face to face”
i’m not a naval expert but it seems to me that it was a very good hunt.
this pics are for ya sexy burger 😀 taken from the 209’s (sorry its not the best quality)

Good for Peru! let’s hope some members don’t wet their pants on this one due to the national origins of some of these fishermen 😉

200 miles of Peruvian jurisdiction???
the terriorial warter of peru extends 200 miles???
200 miles is the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Emphasis is on the word exclusive. 😀
