I have posted some photos which highlight the site at “Hardwick” which is shared by two separate groups those being the 93rd., Bomb group memorial site and museum and where Maurice Hammond has his hangar. The weekend just gone was celebrated with Maurice hosting a “wartime weekend” with a hangar dance on the Saturday.People in costumes and vehicles of war and post war were specially welcome.
Also included is a photo of the lady whose name was chosen by the once pilot of the mustang a,”Capt Bradford Steven’s”whose two Christian names are Mary Anella thus making “Marinella” now Mrs Shufflton she stands proudly next to the aircraft she thought she’d never see. Also as a little tribute to “Big Beautiful Doll” is a photo from a couple of years ago in happier times at the site. Some of the photos included are 5mpeg only so quality not so good as it was rain one minuete and dry the next so kept my “good” camera dry till the “Hun”:)came out.Hope nobody minds the vehicles included but I think they they deserve a mention as they have all in one way or another been on duty at an airfield site.

Hardwick Open Day 16-10-2011
Maurice Hammond held an open day at Hardwick with the profit going to Breast Cancer, a charity which Maurice supports. The weather was good and thank you Leah for the burgers, they were really good. Shame about my diet , I would have had more than one.

Hi Gary….Another nice period outfit mate and it seems a bit of a speciality that takes a lot of your time.Did you say”MILDENHALL” the eagles lair:eek::)now that would be a great place to get some images:).
If you want the prop blur on your 500 use the mode dial and put it on T.V(Aperture priority)and set the shutter speed at about 1/250 for starters and put the ISO at about 200 to brighten things up.Just try and follow things as you see them and try and press the shutter without moving the body of the camera.I always hold the camera close to my face and use it as a buffer to keep it as still as possible.
That’s just a rough guideline and when you get good weather and better light you can experiment by reducing the shutter speed even more and click away to see what happens.:)I’m getting better at knitting 😀 and worse with my experiments on my own cameraHa,ha.See you about and good luck and maybe you will get to post some of your shots on this site..cheers..JB

Hi Tarkey had a look at your shots on the other post and yet again some terrific shots, I will try to make your open day, all depends on my work commitments ( I work for the MOD on Mildenhall ) and being Nightshift on a rolling shift pattern, getting time off can be hard work, thats why i avarage about 3 events a year….But i will try.
Eh, thanks for O.K to download thats great, I have some shots of me taken by the wife but she’s as good at photography as i am at kniting:D
I myself have a Olympus E500 which is fully automatic, which is O.K untill you want to do prop-blur or like me use an add on lens…then everything (focus, appture setting, film speed, lighting ) becomes manual. I think it’s like you say “one hell of a lot of trial and error!” Many thanks again guy …Gary
P.S here’s one of me at Snetterton

Hi Gary I am the Tarkey refered to by the EH team. I spoke to you and asked about coming down to our do at Martlesham Heath on the 11th September
have a look at opur web page www.mhas.org.uk and you can also click on the facebook link to see the dedicated page to our open day. We have just confirmed a Mustang Cockpit for the day as well. You might also see me as a USAAF Major in the 356th FG based here at MH during WW2

Hi Gary…Nice to hear from you and glad you found the site and thread. You can download the photo from the thread or any that you want and was pleased you liked them anyway.:)
I’m not a camera/photographic expert but can help you with some basic problems so if your there next time and I’m about I’d be more than happy to help if I can,(there is a lot of luck involved)in getting some of the flying shots.:)They are a pretty friendly bunch that run the aircraft and Maurice and his team are always easy to talk too and ask questions about anything aviation I suppose.
That’s the beauty of these small events when the owners let the people attending be interactive and tactile with the machines and also let them photograph them up close. Also there is another thread on page 3 of the historic aviation page done by a chap called “tarkey” and there is some more photos.Anyway nice to have met you and might see you about there should you find your way there again.ha,ha….P/s The outfit was very realistic maybe you should give the BBC your name and there wardrobe outfit unit might get you some work, you never know

Great set of photo’s, Love the Luftwaffe guy (yes that’s me!!) sorry about squinting (I work nightshift and dont get to see the sun much). Those P-51 shots are incredable, if i had more time ( and weren’t in danger of getting run over by traffic) I would have asked you for some tips on photography as im wrestling with my camera at the momment. The event was great, I had never been to the 93rd before, and given finding the place was hard was amazed how many came to the event. Your ground shots portray the event very well also…But the highlight of the day for me was after the P-51s had landed the stewards droped the barriers and we were allowed to get up close and personnel with the aircraft….and to thier credit the public showed due care and reverance to the mighty P-51s….Like i said great photo’s, great event, shame about the wheather…..Gary

With the “past meeting the present” and the many folk in different dress modes at Hardwick from the weekend just gone I was most taken aback by all the events.Normally when the site is open on the third Sunday of each month just a handful of people can be counted wandering around the place and there is a sense of calm that can only be found in old airfields sites such as this.
Having arrived it felt almost like going to a major airshow:eek::) and have included a few extra shots to try and convey some of the sites that made me smile and think….lastly where else could you expect to find the Cadillac of the sky’s and the king of the road sharing sharing a parking space….

Big Beautiful Doll looks to be painted silver here yet at Duxford, just before her crash, she seems natural metal. When did she lose the paint?

Thanks Mr Wiseman….It was a little surreal going on the site that weekend with a feeling of the past meeting the present and those not in retro attire feeling a little out of sorts..:)
