A-10 replacement – close air support in the 21st century

The A-10 was designed in the 1970s, based on experience from the Vietnam War and intended to be used as a tank-buster if and when the Soviets invaded the West. Leaving aside the fact that the F-35 is supposed to replace the A-10 – joke? – what should a modern close air support aircraft, to replace the A-10, be like?

For example,

1. The aircraft was designed around its massive 30mm Gatling gun. However that weapon can no longer defeat modern tanks, while it’s overkill for dealing with any other vehicle.

2. Developments in sensors and precision guided weapons mean that the ability to carry a heavy payload is no longer that important.

3. The A-10 is a large aircraft, which means it’s a target that’s easy to see.

4. Is a STOL/rough field requirement relevant/desirable?

5. Integrating fixed-wing CAS with artillery and attack helicopters – what exactly is the mission?

So, what do you think?
