A-10 Thunderbold II

Most of you probably read the A-10 article in the latest AFM issue (May 2001). With big titles like “staying operational until 2028!”, they try to convince us of the superior qualities in the CAS role with this remarkable aircraft.
But does this mean the A-10 production line will open back (with new companies like Boeing or LMTAS), and that the whole aircraft will be redesigned to become stealthier, more powerful etc. Or is the Whartog so strong that it can survive 40 years of being in service without suffering from metal fatigue?
Spare parts are already difficult to find, so they probably will have to re-open the production line in order to make those spares.
A better A-10 is the best option (according to me), as none of the more “conventional” and “sophisticated” jets can replace it.

– An F-16 with such a big gun and 300 rounds (which is only 1/3 of the amount the Whartog can carry), being referred as the A-16, doesn’t provide a comfortable ride for the pilot, especially when he wants to fire the gun, the F-16 feels like falling apart. An F-16 with Mavericks or cluster-bombs may be a good, but without the same gun, it will never become as good as the A-10.
– The JSF? Maybe but it don’t see how this one could carry the same gun.
– Apache Longbow helicopters?
– …

So what’s it gonna be?

Greetings
