A-5 Vigilante replacing F-111 Aardvark

Back in the 50s and 60s when many different fighters were developed at a given time rather than just a handfull as now. So at times a fighter expected to be a wonderfighter would turn out to be a disapointment as had happened with the F-111, and a fighter developed as an afterthought turned out to be unexpectively impressive. My question is would the A-5 have made a better choice in the role that the F-111 somehow seemed to be forced into simply to justify the ammount of effort that was put into its development?
