I know it was rushed in to service, when the big wig’s were running around in a panic over the big red bear’s growing Airforce, and basically they had nothing better ready to counter the threat :rolleyes: .
So what was so wrong with it, I have read of fatal handling problem’s and the engine’s were some what lacking in performance.
It look’s like quiet a nice looking aircraft 😮 , but look’s are not everything I guess.
Would anyone like to comment on this aircraft, and fill me in on what went so wrong in service. :confused:
Did it have more undeveloped potential :confused: .
I know money was very tight then, and the politic’s of the day was spend less not more, so that would not have helped :rolleyes: .

The 2nd prototype VV119, after modification to Type 535, starred as “Prometheus”. I’m not surprised they changed the type number, it’s difficult to believe it’s the same aircraft. See Damien’s site for details.

Thank’s Damien, I forgot I had the thunder already on the Fav list :rolleyes: .
Sound’s nasty the pitch up problem’s,
Going backward’s at say 700 mph in a matter of second’s must have been real fun and game’s 😮 , how many guy’s were lost or managed to survive this event I wonder :confused: .
I guess it was before the day’s of the”Area rule”, and so many of the aircraft design’s at that time, were self destructing or leaving their safe flight envelope’s at high speed.
The F-100 ” Hun “, was a bit that way too, As test pilot Wheatie’s Welch found out the hard way, and a few other pilot’s when it was rushed in to service as well.

Atleast the Recon version Swift was of some use 🙂 .

Whilst a mere kid at Lyneham armed with a Brownie camera I took this of a couple of Swifts http://image24.webshots.com/25/6/62/88/39166288HTrXmh_ph.jpg they were positioned at C Site #33 MU on the Calne road with their intakes taped up. These were gathered for acceptance and modification before entering service, many problems were encountered with the guns and some sort of engine flame out problems. I do recall many sonic booms over the airfield in 1953/54. I believe that a few squadrons served with the 2nd TAF in Germany.
