With India and Russia close to clinching the much delayed deal on acquisition of Aircraft Carrier ‘Admiral Gorshkov’, the Naval Chief Admiral Madhvendra Singh begins an eight-day visit to Russia on Saturday.

The Naval Chief, heading a six member high level delegation with hold talks with top Russian military leadership besides visiting Russian ship building establishments.

The Naval Chiefs visit assumes significance in the backdrop of Russia and India finalising a 300 million US Dollar deal for assembling the advanced Russian Killer class “Amur” submarines in India.

The Russian killer and hunter class submarines would be assembled here as part of Defence Ministry’s ambitious 20-year plan to increase the submarine fleet strength.

Six “Amur” class submarines would be be built here along with opening the lines for assembling French “Scorpene” submarines as well as stealth warships based on French design.

The Naval Chief will also visit the production lines of the first ever Indo-Rusian joint venture Brahmos cruise missile, which are intended for Naval use.

The Missile which been tested successfully twice so far on Russian as well as Indian soil would be ready for commercial production and induction by 2003.
