During WW2 many air forces tested the concept of motherships carrying combat aircraft. The Soviets actually FLEW a TB-3 bomber with FIVE fighters attached…..

They also flew a TB-3 with two I-16SPB fighter-bombers attached – and successfully attacked Constanta with them.
